SCHOOL/UNIT DESCRIPTION:
The Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) is a newly formed and rapidly growing institute within the Dean of Research. As an independent research institute, HAI’s mission is to advance AI research, education, policy and practice to improve the human condition. The research programming at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence works to foster interdisciplinary research and elevate that work to a global audience through grant programming, convenings, fellowships and more.

POSITION SUMMARY:
We are hiring one (1) full time (100% FTE), benefits-eligible, fixed term research associate for two (2) years. Although not guaranteed, there will be potential for an extension/renewal following the initial 2 years contingent upon additional funding commitments and/or programmatic needs. 

Reporting to the Director of Research Programs, the Senior Manager of Research Communities will foster the community of over 400 HAI faculty affiliates ultimately creating and managing a diverse portfolio of initiatives that strategically promote complex interdisciplinary research on human-centered artificial intelligence.  These initiatives include, the development of collaborative research communities and centers within HAI, organization of research events in support of the overarching goal to foster broader connection between Stanford HAI research and the broader community and the development of tools that facilitate the adoption of a human-centered approach to AI research. 

This position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting (hybrid of working on-site and off-site), subject to the operational need.

CORE DUTIES:

    • Lead and oversee development, implementation, administration, and evaluation of programs. Oversee analysis, reporting, and program improvements. Oversee the development, adherence to, and implementation of program policies and procedures.
    • Lead strategic planning for the program/entity.
    • Represent the entity or program to the broader university, external community, and other stakeholders. Provide expert consultation related to program development, funding opportunities, or other specialty area.
    • Develop outreach strategy related to program communications, development, partnerships and fundraising/funding. Identify external funding opportunities and write proposals and research grants. Develop and oversee strategic financial planning and sustainability for the program/entity, as needed; monitor performance and ensure appropriate controls.
    • Teach or co-teach courses; oversee the administration of courses; create and/or advise in the development of curriculum; and/or advise students, coach and mentor clients and program staff.
    • Coach and mentor program staff.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Advanced degree and five years of relevant experience in area of specialization or combination of relevant education, training, and/or experience. Experience developing program partnerships and funding sources.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources.
    • Advanced oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
    • Ability to oversee and direct staff.
    • Ability to manage budgets and develop financial plans.

          
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Demonstrated knowledge of project management skills in a structured project environment across interdisciplinary groups.
    • Ability to use logic to calculate data, efficiently construct a database and produce data in a clear and understandable manner
    • Basic knowledge of AI concepts, such as computer vision, natural language processing, etc.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

    • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks.
    • Occasionally use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
    • Rarely sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.
    • Ability to use voice to present information/communicate with others.
    • On-campus mobility.

The expected pay range for this position is $113,000 to $168,000 per annum.
Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
