Reporting to the Head of the Social Science Data and Software (SSDS) unit of the Center for Interdisciplinary Digital Research (CIDR) in Green Library, the Research Data Curator will support the creation and development of a standards-based research data ecosystem and work closely with librarians who acquire research data. The successful candidate will work with librarians and data specialists who will help re-envision the Library’s role within the research data lifecycle and who can respond to and support new research methods being used by Stanford’s research community. The Research Data Curator will help to ensure that Stanford Libraries-acquired collections of qualitative data, quantitative data, text corpora, and software are properly evaluated, structured, described, and accessioned into the Libraries’ digital collections and are made discoverable, accessible and usable for researchers at the University. This position will add value to existing research data services by tying together in a holistic way Stanford Library’s strengths in supporting faculty research grounded in a data lifecycle perspective. This position would actively participate in promoting and incorporating FAIR data principles into our strategic planning.

This position will work to establish standardized data processes and workflows across the libraries and is expected to collaborate closely with colleagues in the Social Sciences, Humanities and Area Studies, and Science and Engineering Resource Groups working with research data, both purchased and generated. This person will also be a liaison to DLSS on digital library infrastructure and workflows related to research data.


• Working in conjunction with subject specialists, bibliographers, and Academic Technology Specialists (ATS), to curate research data acquisitions.
• Clean, enhance, and transform research data and metadata.
• Verify, process, and update research datasets.
• Collaborate with other Stanford Library units to make sure research data assets are discoverable and accessible to library users.
• Build and maintain data management and curation documentation and guides.
• Participate and track developments in the data curation, data management, and research data tools communities (e.g. DDI Alliance, Digital Curation Centre) in order to ensure Library workflows and processes are aligned and develop with community standards.
• Engage in outreach efforts within the library and with academic departments to assist with adoption of new data management and curation tools and services.
• In coordination with colleagues, organize trainings and workshops in areas related to research data lifecycle management, including data curation, analysis, and publication.
• Provide data management consultations and referrals to campus data creators in support of the research mission of the university.

Education & Experience:

Advanced Degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries and two or more years of relevant experience in a relevant library setting or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Preferred Education & Experience:

Masters or Ph.D. in information science, data science, or a related field.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Experience with relevant aspects of library operations including understanding of contemporary library practices, trends and emerging technologies.
• Demonstrated understanding of the broad scope of library operations with ability to understand how their role interacts with the rest of the organization.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment and negotiate issues with people from different parts of the library.
• Ability to identify challenges and opportunities, engage others in their resolution and recommend appropriate courses of action.
• Demonstrated ability to evaluate online resources in terms of content quality, functionality and user interface issues.
• Ability to independently perform complex job functions such as collection management reviews, preparation of major exhibits, developing policies for business practices.
• Consistent display of strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated bibliographic expertise or basic managerial/supervisory skills.

Other Relevant Knowledge, Skills and Abilities May Include:

• Demonstrated understanding of the research process as demonstrated by academic or work experience.
• Demonstrated knowledge of issues and technical challenges related to data curation, including privacy and de-identification, format migration, preservation, metadata, discovery, provenance, and data access (including Open Access).
• Demonstrated familiarity with relevant standards for research metadata (e.g., DDI, SDMX, Schema.org, TEI, MODS, etc.) and data management practices and requirements.
• Demonstrated experience managing, analyzing, and otherwise working with research datasets using analytic tools and/or statistical software packages.
• Demonstrated familiarity with one or more statistical data analysis platforms/languages/tools, such as SPSS, SAS, Stata, MATLAB, R, Python, etc.
• Demonstrated understanding of FAIR guidelines and how to integrate into policies and workflows.
• Experience organizing public events and conducting training sessions and workshops.
• Demonstrated initiative in fostering new ideas and implementing change.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with researchers and support staff across campus units.
• Familiarity with qualitative methods and tools (e.g., NVivo, Atlas.ti, etc.).
• Experience with data visualization or data mining.
• Experience with publication using RMarkdown, Jupyter Notebooks, GitHub or similar tools.
• Experience working on projects that support data-intensive research and ensure high functionality, discoverability, and preservability of digital research.
• Experience with computational methods (e.g., machine learning, text mining, natural language processing, topic modeling, social network analysis, etc.).
• Excellent problem-solving and organizational skills; flexibility.

Certifications and Licenses:

Physical Requirements*:

• Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
• Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasps lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
• Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).
• Use a telephone, operate hand controls.
• Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 50 pounds.
