Stanford Libraries is seeking a full-time Social Science Collections Support Specialist to join the Social Science Resources Group (SSRG) to provide essential, targeted bibliographic support for both collection development, public service support, and administrative support for the librarians & subject specialist in the SSRG unit in Green Library. About the Position: 

To provide support for a range of collection development, project management & event support for the activities of the collection development librarians and subject specialists within the Social Science Resource Group (SSRG) in Green Library at Stanford Libraries.

Core Duties*:

  • Project management assistance for social science collection development initiatives & projects (such as, utilization of the Stanford Digital Repository (SDR) for preservation and collection building and web-archiving quality control).
  • Maintain or assist in the development of bibliographies or organized research tools (e.g. library guide pages, Spotlight exhibits, or a suite of web pages, as well as written documents associated with library collections and research support activities).
  • Provide reference and research assistance for the Social Science Resource Group bibliographers.
  • Provide support for events sponsored by SSRG including workshops, outreach events, and collection spotlights.
  • Coordinate and perform a wide range of activities, including reformatting materials on out-of-date media, creation of basic metadata elements, and creating preservation copies with appropriate preservation and data curation staff.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of policy concerning the organization, circulation, and care of the social science collections.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues, as needed.
  • Assist SSRG bibliographers on complex acquisition projects.
  • Manage day to day operations of a unit, ordering supplies and may include supervision of lower-level staff.
  • Interact with management and colleagues within and outside the functional area in support of the Stanford Libraries.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree plus three or more years of experience in an academic library, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must have subject knowledge associated with undergraduate course work in a specialized subject (e.g., social science disciplines).
  • Ability to understand and communicate library policy.
  • Experience with complex information systems (e.g., web-archiving tools).
  • Experience with supervision of lower-level staff and a growth mindset for learning & sharing new knowledge.
  • Demonstrated experience in using judgment and initiative to analyze and recommend new procedures.
     

Other relevant skills may include:

  • Quality control & file management skills for digital projects including file reformatting and metadata validation.
  • Ability to work independently and manage projects, (e.g., web-archiving and collection preservation projects).
  • Familiarity working with web content management systems (e.g., Drupal, Spotlight, Springshare).
  • Proofreading/copy editing (high degree of proficiency in reading and writing in English), for assisting with the updating of web content in an array of platforms, as well as print content for special events and library outreach projects.
  • Technical Skills: data analysis tools helpful for working with collection development data in an array of platforms (e.g., Google drive tools, Excel, Tableau, etc.).
  • Reading knowledge of one or more Western European languages.
  • General knowledge of any of these software, data tools or languages is a plus, but not required: NVivo, SQL, R, JSON, Python, & CSS.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to push a cart weighing up to 650 lbs. that requires an initial push force up to 70 lbs.
  • Ability to work in an environment that is dusty and or moldy
  • Ability to lift books that are up to 10 pounds
  • Ability to kneel and reach
  • Must be able to stand for many hours

The expected pay range for this position is $35.10 to $42.79 per hour.  Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
