Minimum Requirements: 

 

Education and Experience (at Librarian 1 level):

●          Advanced degree in library or information science, a relevant academic discipline (history, geography, geology, environmental studies, etc.), or a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant academic discipline combined with relevant experience is required.

●          Understanding of relevant subject matter in a discipline such as history, geography, geology, environmental studies, urban planning, political science, etc.

●          Working knowledge of how maps or geospatial information inform scholarship in a variety of disciplines such as those listed above.

●          Basic knowledge of how academic libraries function.

●          One or more years of experience in a library or related setting with evidence of capacity to work at a high level of responsibility or a combination of education and relevant experience.

  

Education and Experience (at Librarian 2 level):

●          Advanced degree in library or information science or a relevant academic discipline (history, geography, geology, environmental studies, etc.), or a bachelor’s degree in a relevant academic discipline combined with relevant experience is required.

●          Understanding of relevant subject matter in a discipline such as history, geography, geology, environmental studies, urban planning, political science, etc.

●          Experience using spatial information (cartographic or spatial) to support research, teaching, and learning.

●          Three or more years of experience in a research library or related setting, including collection development responsibility.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (at Librarian 1 level):

●          Interest and/or experience in building or managing paper and digital cartographic and spatial collections.

●          Knowledge or willingness to learn cataloging practices for cartographic and spatial materials. 

●          Familiarity with maps, atlases, spatial information, and/or satellite imagery, preferably as it pertains to use in an academic setting. 

●          Experience with relevant aspects of library operations including understanding of contemporary library practices, trends, and emerging technologies. 

●          Ability to work effectively in a team environment and negotiate issues with people from different parts of the library.

●          Ability to evaluate and use online resources to determine content quality, functionality, and user interface issues.

●          Consistent display of strong verbal and written communication skills.

●          Basic managerial or supervisory skills. 

●          Flexibility to be organized, productive and effective in a dynamic environment, involved with a variety of simultaneous projects and workflows.

●          High level of comfort in digital environments coupled with the ability to read complex visual information.  

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (at Librarian 2 level):

●          Ability to independently perform complex job functions such as collection development of cartographic and spatial materials, collection management reviews, preparation of exhibits, and developing policies for business practices. 

●          Experience with minimal level cataloging procedures and principles as defined in RDA, AACR2, MARC Bibliographic, Holdings, and Authorities formats. Ability to manage implementation of new cataloging procedures and principles adopted by the Department.  

●          Experience supporting faculty and students with maps, atlases, spatial information, and/or satellite imagery through reference or teaching interactions.

●          Understanding and engagement with the range of library operations, trends, and practices.

●          Evidence of professional contribution and achievement beyond the library may be expected at this rank.

●          Demonstrated success in engaging with colleagues across library departments and in support of faculty teaching/research in a collaborative and constructive manner.

●          Ability to manage projects, develop policies or drive library initiatives across functional lines. 

●          Demonstrated success in independently performing complex job functions such as collection management review, preparation of exhibits, developing policies for business practices. 

●          Evidence of engagement in relevant professional or academic communities.

●          Consistent display of excellent verbal and written communication skills, including strong presentation skills. 

 

Other Relevant Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities May Include (at Librarian 2 level):

●          Demonstrated success in managing and completing complex projects to include hiring project staff, project budget management, communicating with project stakeholders, and meeting project deadlines.

●          Experience in donor relations and providing information on terms of donated collections. 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

●          Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.

●          Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp, lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

●          Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).

●          Rarely use a telephone, operate hand controls.

●          Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

●          May work in confined spaces and at heights 4-10 feet; be exposed to dust and mold; work extended hours, evenings and weekends.

The expected pay range for this position at Librarian 1 is $76,000 to $92,000 per annum.  The expected pay range for this position at Librarian 2 is $86,000 to $101,000 per annum.  Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
