Stanford Libraries seeks a Data Curator for Interdisciplinary Sustainability to join a team of existing and new data curation professionals at Stanford Libraries.

We conceive of the area of Interdisciplinary Sustainability broadly and in alignment with the newly-inaugurated Doerr School of Sustainability’s mission to draw upon “a deep understanding of Earth, climate, and society to create solutions at a global scale.” As a member of Stanford Libraries’ Research Data Services (RDS) department, the Data Curator for Interdisciplinary Sustainability will play a key role in advancing the Libraries’ data curation program. Alongside a growing team of data curation professionals within RDS, this Data Curator will primarily assist Stanford researchers from the Doerr School of Sustainability in finding, processing, managing, analyzing and preserving data. The Data Curator is expected to work with data in areas such as climate, environmental justice, social science, and engineering. (See https://sustainability.stanford.edu/school/departments for a list of the Doerr School’s current research focus.)

The Libraries values are rooted in a commitment of mutual respect, the idea that every member of the staff has something to contribute, and that learning is constant.  We seek a team member who is ready to share their skills and perspectives.

About Stanford Libraries:

Stanford Libraries is a network of over 15 libraries with over 400 employees. We are committed to fueling the teaching, learning and research across Stanford by acquiring, stewarding, and making available a robust collection, currently more than 12 million items. Everyone in the organization plays a vital role in fulfilling that objective. Our dedication to discoverability and information management also has us engaged in dynamic global partnerships. We are constantly building and strengthening our organization, and we recognize striving for excellence is a marathon and not a sprint. We are constantly trying to strike the right pace and admit there are times when we find ourselves at a fast jog. While we hope to always find candidates who fit within our organization, what we truly seek is someone who will add to our culture, our profession as well as the greater academic arena. We are invested in the success of our teams and the individuals who represent Stanford Libraries.

About the Position:

The Data Curator will collaborate with subject matter experts in the Branner Earth Sciences Library and the Miller Marine Biology Library, the Libraries' acquisitions and metadata specialists, Digital Library Systems & Services, and data management professionals in the Doerr School to ensure that researcher-generated data are FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable), especially in light of new guidance from the Office of Science and Technology Policy. This may include advising researchers on the use of domain repositories, Stanford Digital Repository, and other data sharing and preservation platforms. As needed, this position will also contribute to the acquisition and accessioning of vendor-licensed data into the Stanford Libraries collection, as well as helping make available scientific data more findable and accessible.  The Data Curator for Interdisciplinary Sustainability will work at the intersection of existing library practices and new opportunities for directly engaging with faculty and students in research data management.

The Data Curator will have the opportunity to contribute to the Libraries' data archiving and provisioning infrastructure, including the Data Catalog, a major project planned for the Research Data Services group.  These contributions include considering vendor and researcher data for inclusion in the Catalog, and in the development of a metadata strategy and workflows that will enable the desired features and functionality of this service. The Data Curator may also contribute to outlining the user needs that will drive the functionality included in the Data Catalog.
