MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and ten years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Three or more years of production management experience related to book or magazine publishing.

Relevant experience may include:
  • Working knowledge of page layout applications, such as InDesign and file preparation in Acrobat, Photoshop, and related programs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced experience managing print projects, possessing a strong knowledge of traditional and digital printing.
  • Thorough knowledge and hands-on experience with all phases of book production, including in-depth knowledge of desktop publishing and the basic rudiments of art and design.
  • Experience in implementing document design templates. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in FTP, file conversion, and printing processes. 
  • Experience working on a project team. 
  • Ability to effectively manage workflow with multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to interface with internal departments and external book publication/production community.
  • Ability to supervise the work of others.

Desired/Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Skilled with text, photo, and illustration research and permissions. Understanding of copyright law and publishing contracts and agreements, and the rights and responsibilities of publishers and authors. 
  • General knowledge base of current costs for a wide range of services in the publishing industry: able to evaluate or generate cost estimates, assess invoices, and discuss budget implications of various production methods/options with vendors. 
  • Ability to use job-required software applications and mediums to paginate materials according to defined requirements.
  • Excellent verbal and writing communication skills; sensitivity to language, expression, and nuance in written texts; meticulous detail-orientation, with an ability to interact comfortably with high-profile individuals.
  • General knowledge of history, personal practice/interest in staying abreast of current events, and policy issues strongly preferred.

  • None.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks, use a telephone, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, grasp forcefully.
  • Rarely lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >50 pounds.
  • Good visual acuity including color vision.
  • Ability to work in a dusty, dirty and odorous environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May work occasional evenings and weekends.
