DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- RVT degree and 3 years’ experience or equivalent education and experience (i.e. 5 years of experience in Animal Research Laboratory).
- AALAS certification preferred. Knowledge of care and use of all medical equipment and instruments used by the Veterinary Care Staff.
- General knowledge and skills pertaining to induction and monitoring of general anesthesia; aseptic technique; emergency cardiopulmonary resuscitation, implementation of life support drugs, and equipment; use of radiology equipment and ability to take diagnostic films; medical terminology; the biology and physiology of all species of animals used in the research facility; nursing care and proper handling and restraint of all animals.
- General knowledge of zoonotic diseases.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Three years’ experience at the Life Science Technician II level or equivalent combination of equivalent academic background and relevant work experience (e.g., three years of college science coursework).
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSES (REQUIRED):
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
- The Technician at the III level is required to have a higher degree of skill than the LST II (for independently performing highly skilled work) and sufficient knowledge of skilled procedures that s/he is able to troubleshoot problems which arise in either equipment or procedures.
- Technicians may also have highly specialized expertise in a particular technical area, or experience coordinating a variety of technical activities in a lab.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
- Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand.
- Ability to stand and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
- Occasionally lift and handle materials up to 10 pounds
- Rarely carry/pull and/or push up to 20 pounds
- Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
- Position may require repetitive motion.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work occurs in a research laboratory environment.
- Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.
- Working with and handling animals potentially infected with diseases transmittable to humans, large farm animals, random source dogs with unknown medical histories, and the potential of receiving wounds inflicted by various animals.
- Working with radioactive and/or biohazardous materials.
- May need to lift and carry loads up to 50 pounds.

The expected pay range for this position is $39.28 per hr. (Step 1) - $47.35 per hr. (Step 10). *
