The Robert Crown Law Library, primarily serving Stanford Law School, seeks a User Experience Librarian who will provide excellent library services to the Law School and to the greater Stanford Community.

 

Working under the supervision of Head of Access Services, the User Experience Librarian will be responsible for observing and analyzing usage patterns, discovering customer preferences, and reporting on emerging trends. The incumbent will make recommendations for improvement and innovation in the provision of library services and resources, and in the design and features of library spaces and interfaces. The ideal candidate will have a passion for understanding users, strong problem-solving skills, and be invested in improving the overall physical and online library experience.

 

The User Experience Librarian will also supervise a team of library specialists and provide oversight of Circulation Desk operations, including, but not limited to, scanning and the faculty borrowing services. Access Services specialists process open-shelf reserves, provide stacks maintenance support and fulfill scan and deliver requests. Enhancing customer service is a priority. This position may work Circulation service points, as needed.

 
In this position, you will:
  • Coordinate the development, interpretation, and enforcement of policies, procedures, and materials to ensure the provision of seamless public service at service points.
  • Oversee the maintenance, analysis, and reporting of access and borrowing statistics for in-house assessment and planning, annual reports, and consortial reports.
  • Collaborate with the Stanford Law School Information Technology department to ensure that technical and access needs for Law Library are met efficiently and effectively.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and make recommendations regarding the circulation functions of the Integrated Library System and self-checkout.
  • Design and conduct user research/usability studies using a variety of techniques (e.g. formal/informal usability testing, observations, online surveys, and interviews).
  • Help scope, plan, and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Create and maintain project documentation. Communicate project priorities and goals with project stakeholders, developers, and library-wide staff.
  • Coordinate effective and strategic marketing of library services, resources, and spaces.
  • Teach, lead tours, and/or give demonstrations of library resources.
  • Contribute to the development of library programs, services, and expertise through participation in task forces, working groups, and implementation committees. May provide advice or assistance to other units within the Law Library regarding user research or interface issues.
  • Work with faculty, students and library staff to develop activities using scholarly resources, technologies and others tools that support teaching and scholarship
  • Work with the Diversity and Access Office to ensure library ADA compliance and support and services for users with disabilities.
  • Supervise, schedule, and train library specialists; Provide general oversight of Circulation Desk operations, including training, staffing, and supervision of student assistants. 

To be successful in this position, you will bring

  • Advanced Degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries or a combination of education and relevant experience
  • Knowledge of relevant aspects of library operations including an understanding of contemporary library practices, trends, and emerging technologies.
  • Effective problem solving, analytical and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated broad knowledge of library discovery environments, office automation software, and online resources.
  • Ability to quickly learn and use print and online tools and resources relevant to Access Services and User Experience work.
  • Knowledge of website design, development, implementation, standards, and accessibility/usability guidelines.
  • Knowledge of common usability testing techniques.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a congenial team environment and to interact effectively with a broad variety of staff within and outside of Access Services.

In addition, our preferred requirements include the following:

  • Master’s degree in library science from a graduate program accredited by the American Library Association plus one or more years of supervisory experience in an academic library, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated success applying user experience methodologies.
  • Familiarity with web content management systems, APIs, and/or web analytics.
  • Knowledge of interaction design, user interface design, and/or graphic design. Familiarity with various software used for conducting usability testing and analysis.
  • Coursework in user experience research methods.
