Immediate opening for a full-time attorney in the Office of the General Counsel at Stanford University. This is a University Counsel position and reports to the Deputy General Counsel for Health Care.

This attorney is primarily responsible for providing legal counsel to the Stanford University School of Medicine (SOM) research operations, working with faculty and staff at SOM, but may also provide advice across the University. This role supports research operations across all Stanford School of Medicine departments and institutes for sponsored research and other sponsored projects domestically and internationally.  This role also will support the future growth of impactful, collaborative research in the broader Stanford Medicine network and community.  The attorney may also be asked to support and advise on other projects and issues at the School of Medicine, healthcare delivery system, and the University.

The attorney must have expertise and experience with drafting and negotiating research agreements, complying with federal grants and industry-sponsored research requirements, and data sharing including privacy laws and regulations.  Other preferred areas of expertise include university or research institution experience, non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), and familiarity with institutional review board oversight. The attorney will work closely with other University offices to provide analysis and advice on complex research projects, agreements, policy interpretation, and other issues.

The position requires discretion, flexibility, excellent judgment, collaboration, and the ability to understand and manage projects with competing interests in a constantly changing, cutting-edge research environment. The attorney must be able to work efficiently and independently, while also working collaboratively with other in-house attorneys and outside counsel.

There are two postings depending on the years of experience, requisitions 100900 and 100901, for the same position. We are willing to consider candidates with more work experience for a Senior University Counsel position. Please only apply to the posting that matches your experience level and feel free to provide further explanation in your cover letter.
