Immediate opening for a full-time employment law attorney in the Office of the General Counsel at Stanford University. This is a University Counsel position, reporting directly to the General Counsel. The attorney will primarily support activities of Stanford Health Care, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, ValleyCare, and the Hospitals’ physician foundations and receive day-to-day direction from Senior University Counsel. The position requires excellent judgment, discretion, flexibility, and ability to understand and manage projects with competing interests in a highly demanding environment. Must be able to work independently, while also partnering and working with outside counsel and other staff attorneys. The attorney should have broad experience in employment-related matters and have an interest in exploring other areas of law relevant to a healthcare environment. In this role, the attorney can expect to:




  • Work closely with hospital Human Resources management to support business objectives.

  • Collaborate with all hospital colleagues to manage risks in a variety of areas, with a focus on wage and hour law-related risks.

  • Utilize expertise and current knowledge of changing federal, California, and local laws relating to employment matters to advise management specifically on wage/hour matters, and related policy decisions or other matters of strategic importance. 

  • Assist in managing employment-related investigations, claims and litigation, including representing the hospitals in agency matters and mediations, and engaging and overseeing outside counsel as needed.

  • Advise on and develop policies, guidelines, and training materials in partnership with Human Resources and other hospital departments, with a focus on wage and hour auditing and compliance. 

  • Conduct training on regular basis on variety of employment law topics at the hospitals.

  • Develop and implement strategies for providing accurate and timely guidance on a wide range of employment-related issues.

  • Advise Office of Graduate Medical Education and Program Directors on employment matters involving medical residents and fellows.


The ideal candidate would have knowledge of a broad range of employment-related legal issues, with demonstrated expertise in the following areas:


  • Wage and hour

  • Pay equity

  • Disability accommodations and leave management

  • Title VII, FEHA and similar harassment, discrimination and retaliation laws

  • OFCCP and other regulatory obligations for government contractor/employers

  • Deep knowledge of California employment laws and experience applying them.

  • Experience in managing litigation and disputes in various types of employment matters, specifically wage/hour class actions.

  • Experience in conducting training sessions and creating effective presentation materials.

  • Experience in conducting and overseeing all aspects of workplace investigations from initiation through to completion.

  • Preferred experience in advising directors of residency and fellowship training programs and familiarity with ACGME Policies and Procedures.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:


  • A law degree from an accredited law school and a minimum of six years of relevant experience.

  • Must be registered with or a member of the California State Bar.

  • Excellence in academic credentials, judgment, writing, analytical and communication skills

  • Proficiency with technology, committed to teamwork, responsive, proven track record of providing the highest quality client service.

  • Experience in mediations, litigation, and arbitration

  • General working knowledge of California and Federal courts.

  • Ability to analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
