Immediate opening for a full-time employment and higher education law attorney in the Office of the General Counsel at Stanford University.  This is a University Counsel position.  The attorney will provide legal advice to the University on all aspects of employment law, with a particular focus on wage/hour compliance, Title IX and other areas of higher education law related to discrimination and harassment, oversight of investigations and grievances. The position requires excellent judgment, discretion, flexibility, and the ability to handle a high volume of work in a dynamic and demanding environment. Must be able to work independently, while also partnering and working with outside counsel and other staff attorneys.  In this role, the attorney can expect to:

 

CORE DUTIES*:

  • Provide timely and accurate advice to clients in all areas of employment law and labor relations, including wage/hour, discrimination, harassment, disability accommodation and leave management.

  • Work closely with Human Resources and Faculty Affairs management to support business objectives in a variety of areas, with a focus on wage and hour compliance and investigation oversight.

  • Utilize expertise and current knowledge of changing federal, California, and local laws relating to employment matters to advise management with particular focus on wage/hour, faculty affairs, Title IX matters, other areas of higher education law related to discrimination and harassment and other matters of strategic importance. 

  • Oversee workplace investigations, including those involving employees, faculty and academic staff, and Title IX matters.  Oversee related appeals and grievances.

  • Oversee claims and litigation, including outside counsel handling litigation.

  • Represent the University in agency matters and mediations, including initial fact-finding regarding charges, preparation of responses, and handling of any hearings/witness interviews.

  • Advise on and develop policies, guidelines, and training materials in partnership with Human Resources and other departments, with a focus on wage and hour auditing and compliance.  Conduct training on regular basis on variety of employment law topics and Title IX.

  • Provide employment litigation risk counseling on various business initiatives.

                                              

The ideal candidate would have knowledge of a broad range of employment-related legal issues, with demonstrated expertise in the following areas:

 

  • Wage and hour

  • Pay equity

  • Disability accommodations and leave management

  • Title VII, FEHA and similar harassment, discrimination and retaliation laws

  • Title IX and VAWA

  • OFCCP and other regulatory obligations for government contractor/employers

  • Experience in managing litigation, specifically wage/hour class actions, and overseeing outside legal counsel.

  • Experience in conducting training sessions and creating effective presentation materials.

  • Experience in conducting and overseeing all aspects of workplace and Title IX investigations from initiation through completion.

  • Preferred experience with labor relations and collective bargaining.

  • Preferred experience in faculty affairs, including appointment processes, grievances, and appeals.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • A law degree from an accredited law school and a minimum of six years of relevant experience.

  • Must be registered with or a member of the California State Bar.

  • Excellence in academic credentials, judgment, writing, analytical and communication skills

  • Proficiency with technology, committed to teamwork, responsive, proven track record of providing the highest quality client service.

  • Experience in mediations, litigation, and arbitration

  • General working knowledge of California and Federal courts

  • Ability to analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems.

  • Skilled at building relationships and working collaboratively
