Our VPDoR Diversity Journey:

●    We create a hub of innovation through the power of diversity of disciplines and people.
●    We provide equitable access and opportunity to all members of the community in order to do their best work, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
●    We listen to and value all colleagues who bring diverse perspectives to the advancement and development of a respectful community.
●    We promote a culture of belonging, equity, and safety.
●    We embed these values in excellence of education, research, and operation.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Stanford University is launching an Open Source Projects Office (OSPO), housed within the Center for Open and Reproducible Science (CORES), which will be the home for open source software best practices, especially as related to open and reproducible scientific research and the academic community. We are looking for a knowledgeable, energetic, and social person who is passionate about open source to help us stitch together the vast patchwork that is the research landscape at Stanford, bring together lab members across all schools, institutes, and departments, and help us create a positive culture where everyone is heard, everyone can contribute, and everyone is recognized.

We are committed to building an inclusive community, and we are looking for someone that can help us do that in meaningful ways. Open source hasn’t always been known as the most diverse or inclusive environment. Let’s fix that with purpose.

The Technical Community Manager (TCM) will engage the Stanford research community through individual outreach and workshops to help connect research, engage new members of the open source community, and surface and propagate best practices.

The TCM will:

●    Convene and run a new group at Stanford, the Maintainers & Contributors Roundtable (grad students, post-docs, RSEs, and staff scientists). This will be a wholly new approach at Stanford.
●    Advise on open source best practices, including licensing, creating and managing successful community projects, and technical issues such as Git, DevOps, etc.
●    Collaborate with the OSPO Executive Director on outreach & engagement strategy, and community building
●    Participate in other OSPO activities, such as First Patch Workshops
●    Listen for emerging practices, investigate new opportunities, and advise our OSPO on new techniques that might be useful outside the communities that developed them
●    Prepare reports related to open source development happening at Stanford, including a registry of notable open source projects
●    Be a supportive teammate and expect to be supported in turn. We are looking for people that are excited by challenges, and want to learn and grow
●    Have the option of contributing code to open source projects

This is a grant-funded, 2-year term position. If the program is successful, we anticipate there will be opportunity to continue.
