We are seeking for an energetic and passionate individual to join our IT Infrastructure & Security team as a System Administrator 2 (SA 2) within the Land, Buildings and Real Estate (LBRE) IT division. 

The group delivers Server Infrastructure and Security related services to LBRE's Sustainability and Energy Management division, Facilities Operations, Stanford Transportation and the Central Energy Facility (CEF) with IT infrastructure services. As a member of the LBRE-IT Infrastructure & Security team, reporting to Associate Director of IT, SA 2 contributes - with minimal guidance - to the uptime, integrity and availability of entrusted servers, network and infrastructure at LBRE. This includes design, installation, configuration and operation of systems, network and virtualization environment.

This position will support Linux systems administration, basic networking devices configuration, and administration of a range of VMWare enterprise services. 

This position will be a hybrid role in which individuals work in diverse office patterns/mixed work arrangements (e.g., mix of on-site Stanford locations, other locations or their homes), typically 20-80% of their time per week. Individuals in a hybrid role have a Stanford workspace as their primary work location and work from home part of their work week.


  • Build, install, configure, analyze, tune, and troubleshoot operating system to achieve optimum performance levels.
  • Resolve difficult system problems and provide consultation or training. Configure and assist in the design of system and network security.
  • Manage hardware, software, and utilities for installation, modification, troubleshooting, maintenance, and upgrades of operating systems and workstation environments.
  • Monitor and analyze resource usage to recommend/develop enhancements to system capabilities and performance.
  • Compare, evaluate, and implement new technologies, and integrate systems into the computing environment.
  • Document systems infrastructure for users, support and consulting personnel, and developers. Train personnel who provide support and consulting services to users.
  • Act as liaison with various departments across campus. 
  • Facilitate vendor relationships.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Comfort with most aspects of operating system administration especially on non-Windows operating systems, such as Linux, openBSD, VMware products, and other kinds of embedded operating systems for IoT or Industrial Control Systems (ICS) devices. 
  • Experience with managing an integrated computing environment.
  • Experience in multiple programming languages for system development such as Bash, Python, and PowerShell. 
  • Experience with networked environments such as ability to use the route command, administer remote access service, query different DNS records, configure network-wide filesystem.
  • Familiarity with principles of Cyber Security hygiene and practice of system hardening and monitoring.
  • Ability to manage shared resources and perform moderately complex tasks. Ability to work well independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to train to others in applications and operating system fundamentals. 
  • Familiarity with principles and practice of system configuration management using modern declarative tools such as Puppet, Ansible or Terraform.
  • Experience with public cloud platforms – Amazon, Google, Azure
  • Experience with open-source software
  • Familiarity with principles of Cyber Security hygiene and practice of system hardening and monitoring.

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation. Frequently sitting.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other, grasp forcefully, use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 21>50 pounds.
