The Sustainable Finance Initiative

The Sustainable Finance Initiative (SFI) is an interdisciplinary research initiative at Stanford that works with public, private and development institutions to engage Stanford researchers in developing the finance and policy tools needed for the transition toward a decarbonized and climate-resilient global economy. Housed at the Precourt Institute for Energy, SFI brings Stanford’s capacity to generate and apply knowledge across finance, economics, business and law to critical challenges in need of tailored and site-specific solutions. Our faculty, fellows and students work in teams with external partners and local collaborators.

Sustainable Finance Fellow

Stanford SFI seeks a talented, highly motivated researcher with a background in finance, economics, and policy for a full time, 1 year fixed term role with the possibility of renewal based on additional funding and operational need. Under the guidance and supervision of SFI, the fellow will play a central role in SFI’s next volume of work, which will encompass a series of research articles investigating frontier questions on the global pathway to Net Zero. The fellow will develop and promote SFI scholarship in advancing the understanding of the data, metrics and products undergirding Net Zero accounting, innovations that drive green finance, and new models and products to better manage climate risk. The fellow will report direct to Soh Young In, SFI’s Financial Innovation Lead.

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities Required and Preferred Qualifications

  • Working closely with SFI’s Faculty Director and Managing Director, the fellow will be responsible for project management and coordination for the preparation and publication of SFI scholarship, which may take the form of a book.
  • Support, scope and develop themes in SFI’s volume of work.
  • Develop work plans, track progress, identify and resolve issues to ensure research deliverables are met.
  • Support central functions of scholarship publication, including stakeholder engagement, communications, events, and outreach.
  • Contribute to SFI reports, publications, and other communications.
  • Assist principal investigators with designing experiments constituting a phase of a research project for which precedents are few; conduct experiments which may involve coordinating a complex experimental protocol.
  • Independently identify/modify standard procedures based on judgment concerning the general goals of a project; select approaches in developing, testing, and evaluating new methods.
  • Lead or participate in multidisciplinary teams (in academia, across different faculties or schools, and in industry, across different functions of the business).
  • Collaborate with the principal investigator to design a research approach of a project and/or integrate results of the entire project.

 

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Graduate degree in an applicable social science related field and five years of applicable experience, or combination of education and relevant experience in an applicable social science.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Masters or Ph.D. in business, public policy, economics, finance, or engineering.
  • Strong track record in project management, preferably in a research context, including communications, events, stakeholder engagement, and policy engagement.
  • Research experience or demonstrated interest in sustainable or innovative finance.
  • An insightful, independent, analytical mind with a strong track record of best-in-class analysis and critical thinking.
  • Experience in contributing to reports/publications/presentations.
  • Ability to contribute ideas for new research project development.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Professionalism and enthusiasm for working with a diverse team in a collegiate and productive manner.
  • Ability to embark on some travel.
  • Fluency in English.

  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, writing by hand, and sort/file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel/crawl, rarely reach/work above shoulders, operate foot and/or hand controls.
