Stanford Summer Session
Summer Session is Stanford University’s fourth academic quarter, offering more than 200 courses from 35 departments to over 2,500 graduate, undergraduate, and advanced high school students. Along with serving the needs of Stanford matriculated students, Summer Session makes it possible for visiting students to take advantage of the same courses, culture, and resources available at Stanford University. The mission of the Stanford Summer Session office is to offer a transformative educational experience to all students, both in the classroom and through an array of enrichment programs, community-building activities, academic support services, and more.


High School Student Life Programs
The position of Assistant Director of Student Life for high school programs has a variety of primary duties throughout the calendar year, with focus shifting from admissions, to program planning, to hiring and staffing, to residential management, and assessment for Summer Session initiatives tied to our high school student population. During the summer this position is responsible for oversight and community building for the high school students admitted by Summer Session for the summer. The individual in this position works closely with their colleague who oversees the unit’s undergraduate and graduate student life programs. Reporting to the Associate Director of Student Life and Academic Programs, but working under minimal supervision, the Assistant Director will utilize experience and judgement in determining how best to meet program needs and resolve complex student issues through collaboration with partners on campus. The role is a full time position with substantial responsibility, including serving as part of an on-call rotation during the summer months.
 
Dependent on admission committee decisions, Summer Session enrolls approximately 500 high school students, most of whom live on campus. While under our care, high school students are given many of the freedoms and responsibilities that come with attending college; however, while these high school students are mature for their age, they rely on their residential staff to aid in their transition to college life. Summer Session staff working with our high school population have responsibilities similar to managing a freshman residence: orient new students to the Stanford campus and academic life; offer relevant programming and support to facilitate this transition; help build community among new students; and support students who are struggling.


Your responsibilities include:
●    Administer a complex residential program while adhering to policies and practices governed by Stanford University and the Summer Session office; manage community building and support initiatives for all high school students admitted by Summer Session; serve as part of an internal team responsible for evaluating student applications; evaluate and recommend high school program and staffing modifications based on end-of-summer surveys.
●    Serve as a main point of contact for the Summer Session office regarding best practices in student life and residential operations; utilize current Stanford models in the development and maintenance of community norms and expectations; share expertise with fellow Summer Session staff and with residential student staff to ensure program goals are consistently applied.
●    Determine optimal staff coverage for residence halls housing approximately 500 high school students; compose job descriptions and offer letters; hire a cohort of 55 residential student staff, including a subset who can serve in team-leadership roles; ensure that each residence has a diverse and representative group of students on staff. Coordinate with HR to track employment and preliminary training requirements for summer employees.
●    Establish training objectives and conduct annual residential student staff trainings prior to the start of the summer program; directly supervise a team of 6 senior residential staff, monitor and approve timecards, and provide end-of-summer performance appraisals; oversee senior residential staff in their direction of smaller teams of student staff within specific residence halls; provide guidance and counsel for residential staff regarding Human Resources policies and procedures.
●    Guide residential student staff in developing a wide range of programs within residence; analyze effectiveness of programming efforts and make recommendations for future programs.
●    Maintain a strong presence on campus during the summer by routinely visiting residences, attending program events, presenting to program participants, parents, and staff during welcome events, and addressing the range of critical needs that arise throughout the summer.
●    Work collaboratively with colleagues within Summer Session to develop annual budgets for residence- and community-based programming and staffing needs; coordinate residential programming goals and develop house budgets designed to achieve stated objectives; track and monitor expenditures related to the operation of the high school-level programs; assist in the review of student staff purchasing and ensure that all financial policies are followed.
●    In collaboration with senior residential staff, colleagues within Summer Session, and partners in other offices on campus, and using appropriate Stanford-based resources: Manage multi-dimensional matters in response to students in crisis, at risk, or who have other program issues; resolve serious incidents related to participant health, well-being, and safety during the summer program, such as mental health crises, interpersonal conflicts, or illness/injury requiring hospitalization.
●    Counsel students on sensitive and confidential matters; provide leadership in reviewing Honor Code charges, Residence Agreement violations, and Behavioral Agreement infractions, and make decisions regarding appropriate disciplinary action within the guidelines and policies of the program and the University.
●    Develop and maintain productive relationships with representatives from a variety of offices on campus; maintain a strong sense of community among potential, current, and former residential staff to promote summer work opportunities; represent Summer Session at a variety of meetings on campus and within the larger community of summer programs.

To be successful in the position, you will bring:
Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.  Advanced degree and/or five to seven years of experience preferred.

Must have a valid CA driver’s license and the ability to operate a university-owned vehicle in compliance with University guidelines and requirements.

The ideal candidate has past experience working in residential education, particularly with high school students, and has excellent leadership skills, judgment, integrity, flexibility, and creativity as well as a positive attitude, the ability to collaborate and consult, and a good sense of humor.


In addition, preferred requirements include:
●    Strong communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, student groups, and leadership.
●    Advanced analysis and problem solving skills.
●    Advanced customer service skills.
●    Relevant computer systems/technology experience, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
●    Ability to develop budgets and create guidelines for program spending.
●    Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.


Work standards:
This position includes extended or non-standard hours, mainly from June through early September, when residential programs are in session. During these months the position will operate on Stanford University’s Main Campus. Although not a residential position, summer engagement includes being on call with the ability to respond quickly to unexpected situations, often in person.

Please note: The Summer Session Office is located at the Stanford Campus in Redwood City. Work during the Summer Quarter will be on Stanford’s main campus. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, staff are temporarily employing hybrid work models as we slowly return to a regular office work model.
