The Student and Academic Services Team seeks a Student Financial Services Director and University Bursar to provide strategic management of the university’s student financial services and programs. This includes the billing and collections of  >$1billion in student accounts receivables including tuition fees, financial aid, housing, meal plans and various other student fees; managing student loan receivables and collections, which is approximately 10k borrowers for over $82 million; and leading the campus financial literacy program for all students.

Reporting to the Associate Vice Provost for Student and Academic Services and University Registrar, the Director/Bursar partners with senior management to visualize and develop long-range plans, financial strategy and policy. The Director/Bursar leads the Student Financial Services staff, manages the programs administered by the office and ensures compliance with rules and regulations that govern federal, state and institutional student aid programs, privacy of data, taxation collection and banking regulations.

Your Responsibilities include*:
  • Continually evaluate and improve the delivery of services to students, parents, alumni, academic departments and colleagues that include use of technology, business policies, communications, and staff performance.
  • Lead and communicate operational plans and strategy for Student Financials operation; provide information and context to leadership.
  • Oversee respective programs, processes, and policies designed to provide a strong system of internal controls to protect and steward university resources.
  • Serve as liaison with University colleagues in academic departments, Financial Aid Offices, the Registrar’s Office, Controller’s Office, Office of the Treasurer, Student Services Center, The Budget Office, Student Life Offices, and others as needed, to ensure Student Financial Services is competently managing programs and services related to student financial issues.
  • Serve as business owner on major initiatives; lead complex high-visibility process redesign and innovation projects; develop and implement initiatives.
  • Proactively work with internal and external systems to ensure that PeopleSoft and other enterprise systems adequately support the student financial business, functions and mission of the Office.
  • Engage in continuous critical analysis of existing systems and business processes; identify need for new systems, and develop and present proposals.
  • Ensure the office provides outstanding service to students, parents, alumni, and departmental colleagues.
  • Manage student financial analysts and accountants to ensure staff is trained, mentored, assessed, and meet the highest standards of productivity and service.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:
  • Master’s degree and eight years relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience that includes management of accounting, financial or higher education operations.
  • Advanced understanding of financial principles.
  • Ability to clearly and effectively present information to internal and external audiences, client groups and all levels of management.
  • Strong analytical skills to review and analyze complex accounting and financial information.
  • Strong leadership skills, previous experience in strategic management and leading large multi-functional teams, including problem solving, conflict resolution, utilization of technology to support services, and knowledge of the programs and services in higher education that relate to financing an educational experience.
  • Demonstrated competency in project management of a high volume of work, some of which is cyclical.
  • Experience working successfully with PIs, their administrative staff, the office of sponsored research and external sponsors.
  • Demonstrated success in performing meticulous, high quality and compliant work; thorough knowledge and experience implementing federal and state regulations governing federal student aid programs, collections practices, IRS tax requirements and related banking regulations. 
  • Ability to work extended hours during peak cycles and travel to school/unit sites across university.
