The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) at Stanford University supports and advances the teaching, learning and research activities at Stanford by promoting a safe and healthy campus environment. Comprised of over 10 technical groups with more than 50 specialists who work in the field with top researchers, faculty, staff, and students, we focus on practical safety and environmental solutions by working with our campus partners in a process of shared learning to support the mission and research of Stanford University. The Environmental Protection Programs (EPP) group of Stanford University’s Department of Environmental Health and Safety provides services related to chemical, radioactive and biological waste management, disposal of legacy controlled substances, hazardous material spill prevention and response, air emission permits, surplus chemical exchange, and shipping of hazardous materials.  In addition, the EPP group is tasked with managing a variety of environmental projects such as underground tank remediation, and soils remediation related to hazardous material spills.

The EPP group seeks a Sr. Hazardous Waste Technician who will perform critical lab packing of chemical waste, coordinate waste pick-ups and interact with waste disposal vendors. Working under minimal supervision, you will provide guidance to clients on complex disposal projects, procedures and problems. In addition, you will take the lead on packaging the material for off-site transportation.

As with all EH&S staff, you will be required to comply with governmental regulations and University and departmental policies and procedures regarding health and safety and must observe and support good health and safety practices.  Additionally, all staff are required to provide EH&S support as assigned during emergencies and other duties may be assigned by the supervisor, the EPP manager, or by EH&S management.

CORE DUTIES:

  • Coordinate waste pickups and interact with waste disposal vendors
  • Take the lead on packaging the material for off-site transportation
  • Coordinate and conduct the transportation and handling of chemical/universal and/or radioactive hazardous wastes, inform supervisor and/or manager of requests that require other than routine pick-ups.
  • Segregate and package chemical, universal and/or radioactive wastes according to chemical compatibility and isotope for off-site transportation in accordance with applicable regulations and disposal site requirements
  • Generate reports on work group activities from computerized database
  • Assign and explain tasks to workers based on instructions specifications received from supervisor.
  • Inspect work for conformance with specifications.
  • Train employees to meet quality and quantity standards
  • Advise supervisor of work progress.
  • Promote adherence to safety rules
  • May perform any of the duties described in the Hazardous Waste Technician specification or other duties as assigned

In addition:

  • You will be a member of the Hazardous Material Response Team.  Respond to spills and emergencies as needed.  These calls may occur at night or on a weekend.
  • Provide support as needed during University emergencies. 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:

  • Chemistry or hazardous material coursework, and extensive experience working with hazardous and radioactive materials.
  • Advanced training in hazardous chemical and/or radioactive material handling and safety procedures as well as hazardous material incident response.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • In addition to the qualifications listed for Hazardous Waste Technicians, the Senior Hazardous Waste Technician must also possess the following job qualifications.
  • Comprehensive chemical and regulatory knowledge to properly segregate and containerize waste.
  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal regulations pertaining to hazardous chemical, universal and radiological waste management, transportation, and disposal. Specific knowledge in hazardous waste packing requirements, including DOT and disposal site packing requirements for hazardous wastes.
  • Work with a wide variety of hazardous chemical, universal and radioactive materials that may require specialized personal protective equipment. Must be able to determine the hazards associated with these materials and select proper and appropriate method and protective equipment necessary for carrying out job assignments.
  • Ability to work under limited supervision and perform assigned tasks from written instructions and established policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate ability to learn and apply the University’s commitment to a respectful workplace including, but not limited to, Affirmative Action, diversity and a workplace free of sexual harassment as it applies to their group. 

Certifications and Licenses:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Non-Commercial Class C Driver’s License.
  • State certification in Hazardous Material Responder, Industry Technician or equivalent certification related to hazardous materials/waste management. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a California Non-commercial Class C driver’s license and drive day and night.
  • Frequently stand/walk, lift carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 20 pounds.
  • Occasionally sit, perform desk-based computer tasks, twist/bend stoop/squat, grasp lightly, write by hand, operate foot or hand controls, use drum dolly and push/carry/lift/pull objects that weigh up to 50 pounds.
  • Rarely, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds or other), work/reach above shoulders, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts and use telephone.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, walk for up to 20 minutes 3 times/day and construct fiberboard boxes.
  • Ability to manipulate motorized and non-motorized cart, pallet jack, drum dolly, and 55-gallon drums.
  • Ability to read various labels and discern colors.
  • Ability to wear and work in a respirator.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May be required to respond to calls 24x7, to work overtime, evenings and weekends, including holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions.May be exposed to radiation, electromagnetic fields, and/or extreme hot and cold temperatures.
  • May be exposed to a variety of halogenated and non-halogenated solvents during weekly pouring activities.
  • May be exposed to any of 20,000 chemicals used at Stanford during response to a hazardous material incident. Hazardous material incidents typically involve small amounts, less than one gallon.
  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

The expected pay range for this position is $46.73 to $56.51 per hour. Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
