Design for Extreme Affordability (commonly referred to as “Extreme”) is a combination of a graduate level course and two project support labs called Social E Lab and Design Lab. In the course, student teams partner with social impact organizations to identify and address real world problems relating to poverty in areas such as agriculture, food, nutrition, health, power, shelter, environmental justice and education. After the course some projects continue to Social E Lab where they receive funding, space, and mentorship over the summer to take prototyping and testing to the next level. In Design Lab, a highly selective group of teams gain continued support to grow further towards implementation.

 

The primary role of Projects Manager, Extreme is to provide and administer mentorship and resource support for student teams as they form during the course and continue to grow in the follow-on support labs (Social E & Design Lab). The position will also work under the general direction of faculty or other management to develop, implement, and administer the overall vision, strategy, and goals of the Design for Extreme Affordability program.

 

For this role we are seeking candidates who have a blend of experience with Social Entrepreneurship, coaching/mentoring students or start-up organizations, and programmatic development. Ideal candidates will have experience with all three areas, but other competitive candidates may demonstrate strengths in 1-2 areas with a desire and willingness to grow into the others.

Your primary responsibilities include:

  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and support for student teams in all aspects of their project development throughout the Extreme Course and Social E/ Design Lab.
    • This includes, but isn’t limited to:
      • Stages of the design thinking process (needs finding, testing, prototyping)
      • Team and project management 
      • Team dynamics advising
      • Partnership collaboration and management
      • Sourcing internal and external expertise
      • Implementing solutions
      • Forming organizational structures
      • Gauging and measurement of a project’s Social Impact
      • IP Management
  • May teach and/or assist in the teaching of the Extreme Course and Social E & Design Lab. Coordinate and/or assist in the curriculum development.
    • Evaluate ongoing student team needs and make recommendations for new curriculum or support structures.
    • Design and execute programmatic modules based on assessed needs of the current student teams. This may include but is not limited to stages of the design thinking process, design reviews and feedback sessions, community building, business planning, implementation, or team dynamics.
  • Manage the administration of the Social E and Design Labs.
    • Develop and organize the programmatic structure of the Labs so that teams gain access to coaching and resource support needed for their projects to grow successfully.
    • Manage student team recruitment and selection processes
    • Manage the physical Design and Social E Lab assets and space
    • Manage & monitor the administration of student teams (project & travel plans, expense reporting, and stipend payments) 
    • Manage and cultivate interdisciplinary relationships at Stanford
    • Maintain and enhance the strong Extreme culture
  • Develop or contribute to outreach strategy related to program communications, development, partnerships, alumni relationships and fundraising/funding.
    • Manage Public Relations / Media of team projects
      • Manage and catalog team activities for internal and external media use.
      • Manage and maintain the Extreme website with project updates.
      • Ensure Extreme’s Social Media channels remain current and relevant.
      • Lead external relations with media and funders.
      • Manage student team project outcomes during & post program participation.
  • · Contribute to and inform on the strategic program/entity planning and related funding and financial sustainability.
    • Collaborate in the finances and budgeting process for the Design for Extreme Affordability Program
    • Facilitate gifts and donations to the Extreme programs and direct to student teams

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience.
  • Facilitating, mentoring and incubating creative and innovating teams
  • Experience with ecosystems for early-stage social impact enterprises
  • Experience applying design thinking methodology
  • A background or exposure to social impact (either working in or with social entrepreneurship or enterprise organizations), particularly in low resource communities
  • Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources.
  • Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in areas of specialization.
  • Ability to oversee and direct staff.
  • Experience managing budgets and developing financial plans.
