Characteristic Duties*: include, but are not limited to and under the direction of the Fire Systems Supervisor the incumbent will:

• Plan and implement small to medium fire sprinkler Projects.
• Train new technicians on established procedures. Transmit instructions and specifications received from supervisor to workers; advise supervisor of work progress.
• Ensure that safety rules are followed.
• Communicate with other groups to coordinate any work that impacts the Fire Sprinkler group equipment and activities.
• Troubleshoot problems for Fire Sprinkler Technicians in the field.
• Order tools, parts and fire protection equipment necessary to ensure all equipment are in good working order and comply with California State and NFPA regulations.
• Adhere to safety rules.

*Comply with governmental regulations and University and departmental policies regarding health and safety and must observe and support good health and safety practices. Attend required safety meetings. Keep current annual training requirements. Provide EH&S support as assigned during emergencies.

Minimum Education and Experience Required:
High school diploma or equivalent. Knowledge and experience equal to 5 years as a sprinkler fitter job foreman or seven years of journeyman level sprinkler fitter work or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Minimum Qualifications: The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the following in addition to the qualifications listed for Fire Sprinkler Technicians:
• Ability to properly measure, cut, hang, and brace sprinkler piping as required by current codes for sites or fittings that are unusual in shape, size and/or location.
• Ability to provide guidance to others.
• Ability to provide successful training to others.
• Ability to work under limited supervision and perform assigned tasks from written instructions and building plans/drawings, using established policies and procedures.
• Familiarity with NFPA 13, 20, and 25.

Certifications and Licenses Required:
• Must possess and maintain a valid California Non-commercial Class C Driver’s License.
• State certification or NICET Level 2 certification in Inspection and Testing of Water-based Systems.

Physical Requirements:
• Ability to obtain and maintain a valid California Non-commercial Class C Driver’s License and drive day and night.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. safely and carry it a short distance.
• Constantly stand/walk, grasp lightly and work/reach above shoulders.
• Frequently climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other) grasp forcefully, perform desk based computer tasks and lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
• Occasionally sit, twist/bend/stoop/squat and lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 20 pounds.
• Rarely kneel crawl, use telephone, write by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, sweep/scrub/mop, and operate hand controls, lift/carry/push/pull that weigh up to or more than 40 pounds.
• Ability to walk and carry/climb ladders for an extended period of time. Be able to use hands to turn sprinkler valves to verify proper operation. Ability to carry pipe that may weigh up to 30 pounds. Be able to use wrench above head on ladder.
• Ability to see and read LCD displays on fire alarm control panels. Be able to communicate with other techs using a hand-held radio and cell phone. Ability to read a computer screen to check fire sprinkler signals.
• Be able to operate a man-lift when needed to reach fire protection equipment in very high locations.

Working Conditions:
• May be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends.
• Respond to service calls 24x7 when on-call.
