The Department of Genetics at Stanford University School of Medicine has an excellent opportunity for a motivated and experienced scientist that is interested in big data management and wrangling. In this position you will work as a senior member on a team of professionals including Ph.D. biologists and software engineers developing a resource for a framework that will elucidate our understanding of how genomic variation shapes phenotypes in the human population. You will serve as the primary liaison with international research laboratories to facilitate the acquisition of the data produced by these labs and will be responsible for the corresponding data modeling and curation.

A strong candidate will have deep knowledge of high-throughput experimental methodologies, large genomic datasets, and their computational analysis in order to successfully describe these types of data. Prior laboratory experience generating genomic datasets and/or bioinformatics analysis experience to identify RNA transcripts, transcription factor binding sites, histone modifications, epigenomics, SNPs and variants within genomic datasets are desired. Familiarity with CRISPR screening techniques, single cell data and perturbation analyses is a plus. Experience with utilization of controlled vocabularies and ontologies to describe biological concepts is considered advantageous. Ph.D. in biology, genetics or bioinformatics is highly desired to facilitate the assessment of experimental details and to successfully evaluate quality control of novel experimental data. In this position you will be responsible for working with the software engineering, literature curation, and bioinformatics staff in the specification, design, and implementation of tools that integrate, search, and display experimental data.
 
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential in order to provide instruction and feedback to members of the scientific community in order to facilitate the acquisition and description of high-throughput data, to effectively provide documentation and specifications to co-workers during tool development, and to contribute to FAQs, tutorials, and publications.
 

Previous experience working in an academic environment is a plus. 
Experience with scripting languages is a plus.
Compliance with and support of University and government health & safety regulations & policies is required.

Duties include:

  • Define novel computational approaches and analytical tools as required by research goals.
  • Run bioinformatic uniform processing pipelines in cloud environment and review the results.
  • Propose new hypotheses and design experiments to test the hypotheses; develop new data models.
  • Compile and create educated summaries of the literature, discovering new facts by analyzing the collected data.
  • Participate in collaborations with other labs. 
  • Work with users to answer questions about the contents of the database and provide assistance for submission of information.
  • Participate in presentations and demonstrations of the database at conferences or other institutions.
  • Create a variety of reports and user demonstration; collaborate with the users in the discovery of new knowledge.
  • Collect and analyze information from peer-reviewed scientific journals and through direct submissions; abstract data into the required format, and verify them for accuracy. 
  • Supervise or guide staff, as needed; schedule and assign workload; set appropriate deadlines; review work for quality and timeliness.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Doctor of Medicine, Pharmacy, or Doctor of Philosophy in scientific field and three years of relevant experience, or combination of relevant experience.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with relational databases, data integration, and statistics.
  • Strong written and oral English communication skills.
  • Computer skills, including word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Ability to understand scientific literature, experimental procedures and their limitations, and current needs of the research community.

  • Frequently perform desk based computer tasks, seated work and use light/ fine grasping. Occasionally stand, walk, and write by hand, lift, carry, push pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

The expected pay range for this position is $135,000 to $164,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
