JOB PURPOSE:
Over the past decade, Stanford University has reduced its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 80% and is on track to eliminate 100% by 2030.  Progress to date has been accomplished through energy-saving building retrofits, the SESI facility and development of two solar photovoltaic facilities that will supply 100% of campus electricity when completed next year. In June 2020, the Board of Trustees passed a resolution calling for the university to eliminate or fully mitigate its Scope 3 emissions by the year 2050.

 

The Scope 3 Emissions Program (“Program”) has two principal objectives:

  1. Reduce, mitigate or offset Stanford’s Scope 3 emissions to the maximum extent possible.
  2. Establish a path that other institutions can follow in addressing their own Scope 3 emissions, through the following efforts:
    • Communications
    • Campus Engagement
    • Regional Community Engagement
    • Collaboration with other Institutions

 

This Scope 3 Emissions Program is being sponsored by the Vice President of Business Affairs (VPBA) and is managed by the Scope 3 Emissions Program Manager in Business Affairs. The Program will collaborate closely with multiple Stanford units, especially the Office of Sustainability in Land, Buildings & Real Estate, Procurement in Financial Management Services and the new sustainability school.  In addition, the Program will be advised by a working group comprised of faculty, staff and students.

 

We have an outstanding opportunity for an Analyst to join the Scope 3 Emissions team.  Reporting to the Scope 3 Emissions Program Manager, this position will be responsible for:

  • Data gathering and analysis across a multitude of Scope 3 categories
  • Reporting and benchmarking of scope 3 emissions
  • Supporting strategic planning and initiatives in communications, campus engagement, community engagement, and collaboration with other institutions


The ideal candidate will be adept at emissions modeling and analysis, but will also have strong relationship-building and communications skills. The Analyst must be able to translate a broad range of input data into meaningful and approachable outputs. This is an exciting opportunity for a technical sustainability practitioner to play a critical role in building out effective, long-term emissions analysis and mitigation frameworks for the university.

 

CORE DUTIES:

  • Execute a tactical plan to meet the objectives of the Scope 3 Emissions Program
  • Gather, analyze and report on program data across 13 relevant scope 3 emissions categories, including:
    • Establishing and/or refining category definitions
    • Establishing and/or refining category-specific calculation methodologies
    • Collecting data from relevant campus partners
    • Calculating, modeling, and projecting greenhouse gas emissions annually
    • Benchmarking emissions with other institutions
    • Modeling emissions mitigation strategies 
    • Contributing to mitigation strategy prioritization, development & proposals
    • Supporting mitigation pilots and programs
    • Thoroughly document outcomes of research and analysis to enable best practice sharing
  • Track program progress against goals and schedule
  • Assist in the development of materials which support the Scope 3 Emissions Program
    • Provide supporting materials for Working Group reports and meetings
    • Create emissions reports and visualizations to assist with communications and reporting both internally and externally
  • Understand and communicate the features, benefits, and advantages of the Scope 3 Emissions Program to a target audience, including:
    • Interested graduate students and faculty members conducting work in this field
    • Undergraduate student groups
    • Hired interns
    • Office of Sustainability to leverage the Sustainable Stanford website for communications and university-wide sustainability reporting for public reporting of scope 3 emissions
  • Support collaboration efforts with other institutions, including higher education, non-profits, for-profits, and the regional community

 

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and one year of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong verbal and oral communication skills
  • Highly organized
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to meet expected deadlines and schedules
  • Team player
  • Experience compiling comprehensive greenhouse gas emissions inventories
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel
  • General knowledge of sustainability topics and concepts a plus

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, speaking.
  • Occasionally grasp forcefully, writing by hand.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Occasional work on evenings and weekends.
