To be successful in this position, you will need:
Education & Experience:
Associate degree or certificate of completion in a related engineering or related scientific discipline, or three years of equivalent work experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Experience applying scientific and engineering principles and practices to perform technical services and support.
- Experience with data analysis, experimental process, design, and development of prototypes, equipment, and/or systems related to area of specialization.
- Ability to write clear documentation, perform administrative duties, and research protocol maintenance related to research studies and/or scientific/engineering projects.
- Experience with software applications, systems, or programs relevant for the job.
- Ability to interpret and determine validity of data and check own work.
- Ability to communicate, liaise, and work with staff, students, faculty, and outside vendors.
- Ability to effectively supervise and train a diverse work staff.
Certifications and Licenses:
- Valid California Non-commercial Class Driver’s license.
In addition, our preferred qualifications include:
- Experience in designing, prototyping, and testing components in scientific instruments, mechanical assemblies, data acquisition, and control systems.
- Interest and ability to learn to work across a broad range of engineering areas (e.g. mechanical, electromechanical, optomechanical, fluidics, circuit design).
- Experience with mechanical fabrication and assembly techniques.
- Experience with basic AC / DC electronics, electronic test equipment, and communication protocols and ability to perform troubleshooting of electronic circuits.
- Proficiency with hand tools and basic shop tools.
- Experience with software applications for CAD, data collection and analysis, and experiment automation.
- Ability to create and maintain documentation of system design and operation.
- Ability to collaborate with senior engineering and scientific staff to design and develop special purpose equipment and/or systems.
- Experience with supporting the plan, design, and implementation of major scientific or engineering initiatives and ensuring project objectives are met.
- Demonstrated ability to establish, communicate, and enforce compliance with health and safety policies and procedures.
- Exposure to or training in several of the following fields: autonomous data collection, animal-borne sensors, automation, microfluidics or fluid handling, power management and battery management, autonomous underwater vehicles, autonomous surface vehicles, CTD measurements and calibration, heat management, basic mechanism design, optomechanical design (optics, microscopy, fluorescence), imaging and image analyses, sensor integration, additive manufacturing.
- Basic machining proficiency (mill, lathe, CNC) and welding experience.
- Demonstrated experience working with and teaching students of diverse academic backgrounds and interests.

The expected pay range for this position is $95,970 to $116,993 per annum.
