The Oceans Department will support the critical activities needed for breakthrough ocean teaching and research and uses inspired research to drive fundamental discovery and impact, including broad interdisciplinary and system-based approaches to addressing global ocean challenges. Our mission and vision are amplified by strong and durable linkages to other existing and emerging units in the new school and across campus.
A critical and major component of Stanford Oceans is Hopkins Marine Station (HMS) located in Pacific Grove, CA. HMS has over a 130 year-long tradition as a renowned marine biological station with over 15 faculty, 30 staff, and 40 graduate students on site.
The Oceans department seeks applicants for a full-time Science and Engineering Associate. The successful candidate will provide specialized technical support, instruction, and consultation; identify solutions to a wide range of unique problems; and execute other research and development activities related to research in the ocean environment.
Your Responsibilities will include:
Support the development of technologies and methods needed for the advancement of ocean science.
Define engineering specifications, design criteria, and solutions for diverse ocean technologies, including autonomous data collection, animal-borne sensors, imaging, automation, and experimental controls systems.
Work closely with faculty, staff, postdocs, graduate, and undergraduate students to scope and develop systems for research and course projects.
Assist in the design and fabrication of electrical, mechanical, and optical instrumentation.
Support the research fabrication shop and experimental spaces including managing student training and access; maintain compliance with shop and laboratory safety practices.
Assist in the maintenance and operation of specialized laboratory and field equipment, and experimental assets.
Manage the mobilization and demobilization of gear to support field operations, in particular research vessel and small boat integration.
Colloborate across cross-functional teams including other research staff, engineering associates, technicians, and students.
Assist with orientation and technical training of new staff and students on lab procedures or techniques.

To be successful in this position, you will need:
Education & Experience:
Associate degree or certificate of completion in a related engineering or related scientific discipline, or three years of equivalent work experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Experience applying scientific and engineering principles and practices to perform technical services and support.
Experience with data analysis, experimental process, design, and development of prototypes, equipment, and/or systems related to area of specialization.
Ability to write clear documentation, perform administrative duties, and research protocol maintenance related to research studies and/or scientific/engineering projects.
Experience with software applications, systems, or programs relevant for the job.
Ability to interpret and determine validity of data and check own work.
Ability to communicate, liaise, and work with staff, students, faculty, and outside vendors.
Ability to effectively supervise and train a diverse work staff.
Certifications and Licenses:
Valid California Non-commercial Class Driver’s license.
In addition, our preferred qualifications include:
Experience in designing, prototyping, and testing components in scientific instruments, mechanical assemblies, data acquisition, and control systems.
Interest and ability to learn to work across a broad range of engineering areas (e.g. mechanical, electromechanical, optomechanical, fluidics, circuit design).
Experience with mechanical fabrication and assembly techniques.
Experience with basic AC / DC electronics, electronic test equipment, and communication protocols and ability to perform troubleshooting of electronic circuits.
Proficiency with hand tools and basic shop tools.
Experience with software applications for CAD, data collection and analysis, and experiment automation.
Ability to create and maintain documentation of system design and operation.
Ability to collaborate with senior engineering and scientific staff to design and develop special purpose equipment and/or systems.
Experience with supporting the plan, design, and implementation of major scientific or engineering initiatives and ensuring project objectives are met.
Demonstrated ability to establish, communicate, and enforce compliance with health and safety policies and procedures.
Exposure to or training in several of the following fields: autonomous data collection, animal-borne sensors, automation, microfluidics or fluid handling, power management and battery management, autonomous underwater vehicles, autonomous surface vehicles, CTD measurements and calibration, heat management, basic mechanism design, optomechanical design (optics, microscopy, fluorescence), imaging and image analyses, sensor integration, additive manufacturing.
Basic machining proficiency (mill, lathe, CNC) and welding experience.
Demonstrated experience working with and teaching students of diverse academic backgrounds and interests.

The expected pay range for this position is $95,970 to $116,993 per annum.
