The Golub Capital Social Impact Lab of the Stanford Graduate School of Business seeks a Research Director (RD). The RD will lead and oversee research related to the mission of the Lab and ensure the research is disseminated widely to both academic and general audiences. This includes defining, prioritizing, and managing research projects; recruiting faculty, students and writers to contribute to the research agenda; managing and carrying out the research; writing, presenting and publicizing research and related thought leadership. The RD also supports the writing of grant proposals around research projects and all organizational duties associated with achieving these objectives.

 

In this role, you will have the opportunity to be at the forefront of social science research and apply state of the art methodologies to solve pressing social impact challenges spanning domain areas such as charitable giving, education, democracy, and worker training. You will also be in the intersection of academia and industry through partnerships with social sector organizations and technology companies.

 

This position can be hybrid (with a minimum of two days per week on site) or remote.  This is a two-year fixed term position.

 

Your primary responsibilities include:

  • Lead and own organization-wide data analytic initiatives (e.g., models, frameworks, platforms, dashboards).
  • Hire, supervise, coach and mentor a high-performing team of postdocs, students, and research staff to achieve the research and teaching mission, goals and objectives of the unit.
  • Create, implement, and maintain project management systems to manage complex research projects and ensure research team members are progressing towards deadlines.
  • Identify, leverage and partner with external firms.
  • Prioritize and extract data from a variety of sources such as notes, survey results, medical reports, and laboratory data, and maintain its accuracy and completeness.
  • Determine data collection and analysis requirements. Design and customize research reports based upon data in the database. Oversee and monitor regulatory compliance for utilization of the data.
  • Use system reports and analyses to identify potentially problematic data, make corrections, and eliminate root cause for data problems or justify solutions to be implemented by others.
  • Create complex charts and databases, perform statistical analyses, and develop graphs and tables for publication and presentation. Write and/or edit scientific content for proposals, research grants, peer-reviewed publications, presentations, translational and educational material, and other program activities.
  • Serve as a resource for non-routine inquiries such as requests for statistics or surveys.
  • Test prototype statistical software and data analysis notebooks and participate in reviewing statistical software and analysis notebooks including replicating empirical analyses or applying software to demonstrate, teach, or apply statistical methods developed in the lab.
  • Provide documentation based on audit and reporting criteria to investigators and research staff.
  • Gather information about ongoing research projects; contribute to strategic program/entity planning, and related funding and financial sustainability.

 

 

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • A bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in a quantitative discipline such as economics, finance, statistics, or engineering. Extensive experience in and strong passion for empirical research and answering hard questions with data.
  • Ability to direct the work of others, for jobs requiring supervision.
  • Relevant subject matter knowledge.
  • Substantial experience with a range of statistical software, project management tools, MS Office, and Google Apps.
  • Excellent communication, writing and analytical skills.
  • Ability to prioritize workload.
  • Exceptional skills in managing team projects

 

In addition, preferred requirements include:

  • PhD in related scientific field
