SEDA Project Manager – Big Data and Visualization

 

We seek a Project Manager for the Stanford Education Data Archive (SEDA) at the Stanford Center for Education Policy Analysis (CEPA). CEPA is a research center that unites an interdisciplinary array of nationally prominent scholars on education policy.

 

SEDA is the first nationwide archive of education test score data, now including over 300 million standardized test scores. Using these data, SEDA publishes annual data on student achievement and achievement gaps for every public school and school district in the United States. SEDA is designed to provide scholars, policymakers, educators, and journalists with detailed information on patterns of educational opportunity and outcomes across the U.S., with the expectation that such evidence will inform and improve educational policies and practices.

 

The SEDA project is directed by Professor Sean F. Reardon, Professor of Poverty and Inequality in Education at Stanford Graduate School of Education (more information about SEDA is available at http://seda.stanford.edu).

JOB PURPOSE:

The Project Manager will work closely with Professor Reardon to collaboratively manage all aspects of the development and expansion of SEDA. The Project Manager may also collaborate with Professor Reardon and the SEDA research team on empirical research using SEDA data.

 
CORE DUTIES*:

We plan to grow the SEDA data archive for researchers while also making it accessible to policy makers, journalists, and educators through an online data visualization web site. The Project Manager, in collaboration with the Faculty Director will support SEDA growth by co-leading all research, communications, outreach, and management efforts of SEDA to include:

 
  • Lead core activities of SEDA to include oversight of staff and data assembly, quality control, documentation, and technical reports, plus development, implementation, administration, and evaluation of programs. Oversee analysis, reporting, and program improvements.
  • With SEDA faculty, lead strategic planning to develop and implement short- and long-term plans to carry out SEDA’s vision.
  • Serve as SEDA’s point person and relationship manager with the visualization web site development team to include identification of ongoing enhancements, user communications, and strategies to expand the user base. Also responsible for ongoing web site content and relationship with the GSE IT team.
  • Represent SEDA to the broader university, external community, and other stakeholders and work closely with these collaborators to expand the impact of SEDA. Develop data sharing and linking agreements with targeted organizations.
  • Working with the Faculty Director, identify external funding opportunities, write proposals and research grants to expand SEDA’s work, and maintain funder relationships through stewardship and regular reports to funders on progress.
  • Develop and execute SEDA’s outreach strategy supporting expanded use and awareness of SEDA, development, partnerships, and fundraising/funding:
    • In conjunction with the GSE Communications Team, develop and implement a communication and dissemination strategy for SEDA.
    • Build, cultivate, and maintain collaborations with targeted external audiences.
    • Engage media and policymakers by translating research into compelling stories through press releases and direct interaction.
    • Expand SEDA’s “network” through email and social media.
  • Develop and oversee financial planning, budgeting, and sustainability for the program; monitor performance and ensure appropriate controls.
  • May teach or co-teach courses; oversee the administration of courses; create and/or advise in the development of curriculum; and/or advise students.
  • Coach and mentor program staff.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
 
Education & Experience:

Advanced degree and five or more years of relevant experience or a comparable combination of relevant education, training, and/or experience. Experience managing a budget and developing financial plans. Experience developing program partnerships and funding sources.

 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to develop collaborations and partnerships with other organizations, to develop and implement a communication and dissemination strategy.
  • Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
  • Ability to oversee and direct staff.
  • Ability to manage budgets and developing financial plans.
 
Preferred Requirements:
  • Experience managing complex quantitative education or social science research projects;
  • Experience working with large educational or social science data sets;
  • Substantive expertise in relevant aspects of education policy and social and educational inequality;
  • Familiarity with the statistical and research methods used in SEDA;
  • Ability to work independently and a manage a team of research staff and graduate and undergraduate RAs; 
 
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • May work extended hours, evenings or weekends.
  • May travel locally.
  • Occasional overnight travel.

This position is fixed-term through June 30, 2020, and may be renewable based on performance and funding.

 

Finalist must successfully complete a background check prior to working at Stanford University.

 

Applicants to this position must be available to work in the United States without sponsorship for 2 years or more. OPT permit holders should confirm that they are eligible to work in the US at the Stanford GSE for two years or more. There’s no visa sponsorship for this position.
