About Stanford University’s Hoover Institution:  The Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace is a public policy research center devoted to the advanced study of economics, politics, history, and political economy—both domestic and foreign—as well as international affairs.

 

Founded in 1919 by Herbert Hoover before he became the thirty-first president of the United States, the Institution began as a repository of historical material gathered at the end of World War I.  The library and archives have grown to be among the largest private repositories of documents on twentieth-century political and economic history.  Over time the Institution expanded its mission from collecting archival material to conducting advanced research on contemporary history and economics and applying this scholarship to current public policy challenges.

JOB PURPOSE:

Perform work to support research or develop public programs and policies, applying basic knowledge and understanding of scientific theory. Specifically, the PolicyEd Marketing Research Assistant will be responsible for generating and supplementing new content for the Hoover Institution’s Educating Americans in Public Policy program (EAPP), under guidance of the PolicyEd team. The research assistant will work on the production and preparation of educational programming based on the work of Hoover Institution fellows.

 

CORE DUTIES:

  • Plan and perform research tasks requiring initiative and judgment by applying basic knowledge and understanding of scientific theory when precedents do not provide specific guidance. General instruction provided by the supervisor as needed. May interpret study results in collaboration with supervisor or PI.
  • Identify, select, extract and summarize data and structured information. Gather and organize data. Present summary of findings to supervisor and/or the PolicyEd team.
  • Conduct literature searches, and write literature summaries and manuscripts, requiring preliminary judgments after the supervisor outlines conceptual approach:
    • Research and draft potential “scripts” for PolicyEd videos based on the current research of Hoover fellows.
    • Organize, write, and assist in assembling supplemental material for PolicyEd content.
  • Adapt new, nonstandard methods outlined by supervisor in designing, evaluating, and editing materials such as: educational materials, questionnaires, quizzes, tests, infographics and other related material, which adhere to the communications and brand strategy for EAPP in a variety of channels (i.e. PolicyEd.org, Facebook, YouTube, and others).
  • Assist with development, communication and design of research findings to internal and external audiences, which may include web updates, social media, and/or white papers, for use in recruitment, educational, or awareness of programs, with guidance from supervisor.
    • Create social media postings to promote PolicyEd videos.
    • Analyze data and improve outreach efforts of PolicyEd marketing materials.
  • May lead and train staff or supervise day-to-day work of student and/or temporary workers, including scheduling, assigning, and prioritizing workloads, setting appropriate deadlines, reviewing work for quality and timeliness, and providing performance review input.

 

ADDITIONAL CORE DUTIES*:

  • Oversee and/or process a variety of complex financial transactions; produce, monitor, and reconcile budget statements; research, identify, and resolve discrepancies. May assist with capital or special equipment requests and/or vendor selection.
  • Provide project management assistance in design and production of EAPP programming.
  • Develop an understanding of the organization’s major programs, services, events and products.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

 

Education & Experience:

Bachelor of Arts degree in public policy or a social science related field, or combination of education and relevant experience in public policy or related field. Relevant experience may include previous internships or work experience in think thank or academic research roles.  

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • General understanding of scientific theory and methods, typically gained through completion of an undergraduate degree in a related field.
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with human study participants.

 

Desired/Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong quantitative skills.
  • Ability to work independently and problem-solve with general guidance.
  • Diplomatic skills, comfort in interacting with prominent individuals, and grace under pressure are essential.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel, and Internet search techniques.

  • None

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, writing by hand, and sort/file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel/crawl, rarely reach/work above shoulders, operate foot and/or hand controls.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May be required to work non-standard, extended or weekend hours in support of research work.
