Electrical Engineering (EE) is one of the largest departments in the School of Engineering, with more than 60 faculty and 1000 undergraduate, masters and doctoral students. The Stanford SystemX Alliance is a collaboration between Stanford University and member industrial firms to produce world-class research and Ph.D. graduates, and is the University’s largest industrial affiliates program. Its singular focus has been on application-driven, system-oriented research. Relevant areas of interest include hardware and software at all levels of the system stack from materials and devices to systems and applications in electronics, networks, energy, mobility, bio-interfaces, sensors, and other real-world domains. SystemX's programs draw on the unique strengths of the university and industry to enhance the productivity and competitiveness of both. Currently affiliated SystemX faculty are found in departments across Stanford’s School of Engineering and in some areas of natural Sciences and Medicine. Our research agenda is continually evolving in accordance with the interests of Stanford faculty and our industry affiliates.

Stanford SystemX Alliance is seeking a Managing Director of Industry Partnerships. The successful applicant will have the ability to nurture ties with our current affiliates, as well as to drive new partnerships with both established and emerging companies. In addition to having a strong technical background in electrical engineering, exceptional diplomatic, interpersonal and communications skills are essential, as the candidate will be working at the interface between companies and faculty, and often with students as well. A track record of having successfully established partnerships in a commercial setting, especially in the Asian market, is strongly preferred. Bilingual fluency is additionally highly desirable, given the global outreach of SystemX’s activities.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and oversee development, implementation, administration, and evaluation of programs. Oversee analysis, reporting, and program improvements. Oversee the development, adherence to, and implementation of program policies and procedures.
  • Lead strategic planning for the program/entity.
  • Represent the entity or program to the broader university, external community, and other stakeholders. Provide expert consultation related to program development, funding opportunities, or other specialty area.
  • Develop outreach strategy related to program communications, development, partnerships and fundraising/funding. Identify external funding opportunities and write proposals and research grants. Develop and oversee strategic financial planning and sustainability for the program/entity, as needed; monitor performance and ensure appropriate controls.
  • Teach or co-teach courses; oversee the administration of courses; create and/or advise in the development of curriculum; and/or advise students, coach and mentor clients and program staff.
  • Coach and mentor program staff.

Education & Experience (Required):

  • Advanced degree and five years of relevant experience in area of specialization or combination of relevant education, training, and/or experience. For jobs with financial responsibilities, experience managing a budget and developing financial plans. Experience developing program partnerships and funding sources.

  • Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources.
  • Advanced oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
  • Ability to oversee and direct staff.
  • Ability to manage budgets and develop financial plans.

  • Experience leading or overseeing the work of technical staff.
  • Understanding of relevant scientific, engineering, or technical disciplines.

  • Experience leading scientific, engineering, or technical research projects or programs.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies, trends, methodologies, and resource management principles.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with others.
  • Strong customer relationship and consensus building skills.
  • Ability to influence and establish effective working relationships in a diverse environment.
  • Ability to resolve issues quickly and make decisions that meet university objectives in a collaborative culture.

Working Conditions:

  • May work extended hours, evenings or weekends.
  • Local and international travel to visit existing and prospective affiliates may be required.
  • Occasional overnight travel.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.
  • Ability to use voice to present information/communicate with others.
  • On-campus mobility.

Pay Range:

The compensation for this position will be based on the location of the successful candidate.] The expected pay range for this position is $140,184 to $175,260 per annum.
