This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.

Anticipated Shift:
The anticipated shift is based on the operational needs and can change at any time with notice.
Monday-Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with a one hour lunch break.

The expected pay range for this position is $29.78 (Step 1) to $35.90 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.

Job Classification Title: Life Science Technician I

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology has a long tradition of major contributions in basic research, a new commitment to clinical and outcomes research, a track record of training fellows for academic careers, and a longitudinal commitment to providing care for patients with complex gastrointestinal and liver diseases.

The Hwang research group at Stanford University, is at the forefront of the battle against gastrointestinal cancers. Dr. Hwang's group works as a team to achieve outstanding results in the field of Gastroenterology and gastrointestinal oncology. This is a research laboratory technician position

Duties include:

  • Receiving, labeling and analyzing samples (blood, gastric tissue etc.). 
  • Organizing and labeling biological specimens using electronic systems.
  • Extracting genomic material from specimens and quantification of DNA/RNA content.
  • Performance of next generation sequencing.
  • Laboratory maintenance.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

  • College degree is required. At least some college-level coursework in life sciences is required.
  • At least 1 year of previous laboratory experience in biology or medical research is required (this can include experience as an undergraduate student).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse group of staff is required. 
  • Detailed note taking in lab notebook is required.
  • Carefully following all written and oral instructions is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand. 
  • Ability to stand and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Occasionally lift and handle materials up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely carry/pull and/or push up to 20 pounds.
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Position may require repetitive motion.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending on research, may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gasses, or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.

WORK STANDARDS:

  • When conducting university business, must comply with the California Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrates the ability to work well with Stanford colleagues and clients and with external organizations.
  • Promote Culture of Safety: Demonstrates commitment to personal responsibility and value for safety; communicates safety concerns; uses and promotes safe behaviors based on training and lessons learned.
