The Rocks and Geomaterials Laboratory (RGL) focuses on the physical and mechanical characterization of rocks and geomaterials for geophysics research applications, from basic science to applied and translational geoscience. Examples of applications include the injection and storage of fluids (CO2 and H2), the characterization of geological and engineered seals, and exploring new raw Earth materials for sustainable cement manufacturing. 

The Rocks and Geomaterials Laboratory (RGL) in the Department of Earth and Planetary Science is seeking a Laboratory Manager to join our interdisciplinary team of engineers and scientists. Responsibilities for this position include supporting the faculty/PI in maintaining laboratory protocols and actively monitoring and facilitating the laboratory's day-to-day operations. Maintaining and facilitating laboratory operations will include inventory management, purchasing general laboratory supplies, and coordinating with Stanford Environmental Health & Safety. The role also provides user laboratory training to support student and postdoctoral researchers in laboratory techniques and skills. Prior experience with rocks or materials' physical and mechanical characterization is preferred.

Your Responsibilities will include*: 

  • Oversee the daily activities of the laboratory, including maintenance; maintain laboratory stock; manage chemical inventory and safety records; and provide general laboratory support as needed. Purchase laboratory supplies and equipment under minimal supervision of Principal Investigator or financial manager;
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair existing equipment as needed;
  • Anticipate laboratory needs to ensure that instruments operate properly prior to use, identify problems or malfunctions with apparatus and replace or repair as necessary, and propose updates, revisions, or replacements to equipment;
  • Train and supervise students and lab users, including technical oversight and  direction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work; Support and improve students’ learning experience: Work strategically with the faculty/PI to improve educational experiences of students by researching and testing better ways to use apparatus/a to study basic Rock Physics concepts and make measurements;
  • Make recommendations on experimental design and/or research direction to Principal Investigator;
  • Develop experimental protocols where modification or adaptation of standard procedures is required; Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; apply to ongoing research and development of new protocols.
  • Work with the health and safety department to ensure the laboratory complies with regulations and all required training;
  • Keep the laboratory space organized to maximize storage and enhance safety;
  • Independently conduct laboratory experiments to gather data for a portion of a research project, including interpreting and analyzing results. Contribute to the preparation of papers for publication, especially in the results section, and to publication of findings.

To be successful in this position, you will need: 

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree and four years of experience in related scientific fields, or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Progressive experience applying multidisciplinary scientific principles and practices to perform experimental design and coordinate laboratory activity;
  • In-depth understanding and experience with analysis and interpretation of research data, and ability to recognize and resolve irregularities and invalid results;
  • Demonstrated experience with and ability to organize data and develop models allowing for integration and display of data;
  • Considerable experience with scientific software applications, systems, or programs relevant for the job;
  • Ability to provide technical leadership and coordinate major installation, materials, tooling, supplies, and scheduling of work crews; ability to work with scientific or research staff in developing/supporting technical procedures;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing and to contribute to the development of research plans.

In addition, our preferred requirements include:

  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in experimental sciences such as Physics, Geophysics, Rock Mechanics, and Civil Engineering and/or experience in setting up laboratory experiments in these disciplines;
  • Prior experience with rocks or materials' physical and mechanical characterization;
  • Experience in managing laboratories;
  • Experience in electronics design, construction, and troubleshooting;
  • Experience in LabView and programming skills;
  • Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles;
  • Experience with acoustic sensors, oscilloscopes, fluid pumps and flow systems, and high pressure/high temperature systems;
  • Proven management and organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines with general guidance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds;
  • Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach, and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts;
  • Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop, and mix or operate hand and foot controls;
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job;
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours;
  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds;
  • Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.

The expected pay range for this position is $93,000 to $111,000 per annum.
