CORE DUTIES*:
• Participate in the development, im¬plementation, and maintenance of programs, systems, and procedures neces¬sary to ensure overall safety and health of employees, community and the environment, and to support institutional regulatory compliance. Topics include but are not limited to: Hazard communication, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, confined space entry, and playground safety.
• Conduct workplace health and safety assessments to evaluate potential hazards and to assist follow-up with accidents and general complaints including but not limited to indoor air quality.
• Support proactive management of building-associated hazardous materials by:
o Surveying buildings for asbestos, lead-based paint and other hazardous materials; providing abatement recommendations, project specifications, and RFPs; coordinate contractor job walks; provide abatement oversight, inspections & clearance air monitoring;
o Supporting laboratory decommissioning by conducting inspections and assessing/coordinating laboratory decontamination work.
• Provide health and safety consultation to project managers, supervisors, faculty, staff and students; coordinate and implement work procedures and engineering controls that minimize construction impacts to the community.
• Conduct employee and student training; participate in emergency preparedness activities.
• Provide technical advice and university interpretation of various government regulations and university policies.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in related allied/scientific field and 1-3 years of experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or allied/scientific field. Preferred: Master’s degree in occupational health and safety or a cognizant, directly related science, plus 3-5 years of experience in the occupational safety and health field.
Eligibility for certification as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) by the American Society of Safety Professionals.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safety surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/ risk assessment, data analysis, and ability to provide recommendations for exposure/risk control and remediation.
• Basic understanding of environmental, health, and safety principles and practices; government environmental, health, and safety requirements and university policies; and related knowledge of pertinent scientific fields to which this background can be applied.
• Competency in identification, evaluation and control of construction and facility maintenance related hazardous materials and conditions including, but not limited to, asbestos, lead paint, mold, laboratory contamination and indoor air quality.
• Knowledge of construction and building MEP systems; ability to review and evaluate construction/demolition drawings and specifications for hazardous material impacts.
• Knowledge of State and Federal hazardous waste evaluation, transport and disposal requirements.
• Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to manage competing priorities.
• Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
• Ability to maintain appropriate current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits).

 
Certifications and Licenses:
• Current EPA AHERA Building Inspector and Contractor Supervisor certifications.
• CDPH LRC Inspector/Assessor preferred but not required.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
• Frequently stand, sit, and perform desk based computer tasks.
• Occasionally use a telephone, write by hand.
• Ability to kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach/work above shoulder, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, write by hand, sort and file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more.
• Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Must wear personal protective equipment as defined/required by job assignments.
• May rarely be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise > 80dB TWA, allergens/biohazards/chemicals /asbestos, or heavy metals
• May work in confined spaces or at heights ≥10 feet.
