Land, Buildings & Real Estate (LBRE) is the operational core of Stanford University’s physical campus. Department Introduction:

The Building Engineering Trades are an integral part of maintaining and improving the core systems of the architectural structures on campus. The HVAC shops provide a range of services to academic, research, library and special University facilities which include the following:

24 Hour Emergency Response

Routine Maintenance

New System Design & Installation

Repairs & Alterations to Existing Systems

Responsible for operation, replacement, repair and maintenance of building related mechanical, electrical, control systems, plumbing, air handling units, pumps, heat exchangers, expansion joints, and other building mechanical systems. Work involves the lifting of heavy mechanical equipment and apparatus and may be performed in areas of extreme heat or cold. Receives and responds to service calls, takes immediate action to resolve emergency situations or system breakdowns.

Job Purpose:

Fulfill HVAC Mechanic – Lead duties on a Monday – Friday schedule from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

Core Duties*:

  • Under general supervision of a supervisor, employees in this classification, lead and direct the work of HVAC workers.
  • Employees at this level do not have supervisory authority over other employees and are not expected to exercise independent judgment on final decisions regarding quality or quantity of work produced by such employees, or personnel actions such as hiring, promotion, discharge or disciplinary measures.
  • Assigns, schedules, and explains tasks to employees; motivates employees to meet quality and quantity standards.
  • Helps a supervisor or worker solve task-related problems; inspects the work of others for conformance within specifications; records information on the work performed; checks to see that safety rules are followed and/or performs other duties to promote the smooth flow of work by the group.
  • Responsible for keeping a supervisor advised of work progress, problems, safety issues, and other significant information that directly affects the operation of the unit.
  • Oversee work in progress to ensure accuracy, completion, and that all safety precautions are being observed for the safety of HVAC workers as well as other individuals and equipment.
  • Assign and explain tasks to workers based on instructions specifications received from supervisor.
  • Inspect work for conformance with specifications.
  • Train employees to meet quality and quantity standards.
  • Advise supervisor of work progress. ∙ Promote adherence to safety rules.
  • Record information on the work performed by others.
  • Maintain inventory records and other appropriate records.
  • Assist supervisor in reviewing plans for new construction, installation and renovation projects.
  • Train new HVAC Mechanics.
  • Provide technical advice to workers as needed.
  • May order tools or parts as needed.
  • May perform any of the duties described in the HVAC Mechanic Specialist specification or other duties as assigned

Education & Experience:

  • Journey level knowledge equivalent to four years completion in an apprentice program as a journey mechanic, with a minimum of four years’ actual work experience in the trade or a combination of equivalent education and work experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • In addition to the qualifications listed for the HVAC Mechanic - Specialist, the Lead classification must have the ability to affect good working relationships with other employees.
  • Must be able to follow written and/or oral instructions and communicate those instructions to others.
  • Specialized trade/craft knowledge of HVAC systems.
  • Ability to promote and support team building throughout the work group.
  • Ability to provide guidance and leadership to others.
  • Ability to properly train new HVAC workers on established procedures ∙ Ability to provide appropriate feedback on the performance of individual members to the Supervisor.

Certifications and Licenses:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California non-commercial Class C Driver’s License.
  • Must possess and maintain EPA Certification and/or Universal Technician Certification.

 

Physical Requirements*:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a California Non-commercial Class C Driver’s License.
  • Ability to drive day or night.
  • Constantly stand, walk
  • Frequently twist, bend, stoop, use light, fine grasping, lift up to 10 pounds
  • Occasionally kneel, crawl, climb ladders or scaffolds, lift 11-20, 21-40 pounds, operate foot and hand controls
  • Rarely perform seated work, desk-based computer tasks, use a telephone, write by hand, sort file paperwork, lift 40+ pounds ∙ Visual acuity, including color vision

Working Conditions:

  • May be exposed to high voltage (600V) electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise > 80dB, confined spaces, working at heights of over 10 feet, hot and cold temperature extremes, heavy metals, exposure to 200 PSI
  • Required to wear appropriate uniform and appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • May be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends, including holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions.

  • When conducting university business, must comply with the California Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements.

  • colleagues and clients and with external organizations.

The expected pay range for this position is $57.96 (Step 1) to $70.04 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
