The purpose of the Stanford Apprenticeship Program is to train an Apprentice to be a well-rounded High Volt Electrician to support the asset value of Stanford’s High Voltage Distribution System. At completion of the Apprenticeship Program the Apprentice will possess skills of a High Volt Electrician. 

The program consists of full time (40 hours per week) of on the job training and two evenings (3 hours each evening) of classroom education. Classroom training for the High Volt Electrician Apprentice will be selected from the State of California Division of Industrial Relations (DIR) list of approved schools.  The Apprentice will have a supervisor, work with a journey person and be assigned a mentor. Apprentices will be exposed to various trade duties covering the curriculum course work.  Excellent attendance at both the OJT and the classroom parts of the program is a strict requirement. 

Although, there is no guarantee of a position at Stanford at the completion of the four year Apprenticeship Program this apprenticeship can also provide a stepping stone toward future certificate in a specialized field. Through classroom work and on the job training apprentices will be trained in the basic skills, and tools of the trade.


Primary Job Responsibilities:

The High Volt Electrician Apprentice will be trained in and required to perform the tasks while working with a journey-level High Volt Electrician in the following areas and equipment:

  • Safety and Job Planning 

  • Direct-Current Voltage Testing 

  • Power Factor and Dissipation Factor Testing

  • Methods Insulating Oils, Fluids and Gases 

  • Transformers 

  • Cables and Accessories 

  • Medium-Voltage Switchgear and Circuit Breakers 

  • Low-Voltage Switchgear and Circuit Breakers 

  • Testing and Commissioning of Protective Relays and Instrument Transformers 

  • Motors and Generators 

  • Electrical Power System Grounding

  • Power Quality 


  • Acceptance Testing for New Installations 

  • Street Lighting

  • Troubleshooting & Root Causes Analysis

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 18 years old

  • A valid California driver's license

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of outside weather conditions.

  • Ability to work safely

  • Must successfully pass a background check

  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalency

  • Must pass an aptitude test (math, English and critical thinking) with a score of at least 80%

  • Must be able to work full time and attend evening educational classes

  • Ability to perform assigned work at a level appropriate for a High Volt Electrician Apprentice

  • Ability to operate two-way radio for communication

  • Ability to follow written and oral instruction

  • Wear protective equipment and clothing as needed

  • Ability to learn and apply safe work practices, including but not limited to: hazardous waste management and handling, Injury and Illness Prevention Program, Confined Space procedures, and chemical safe practices.

  • Ability to perform various maintenance and moving tasks including, but not limited to: work from step ladders, must be able to lift heavy materials frequently each day, work overhead, kneel, stoop, stand, crawl, or sit for long periods of time, work in all types of  weather.

  • Ability to respond to emergency calls on evenings and weekends.

  • Willingness to work variable shifts at night or on weekends.

The Apprentice will be paid at the initial hourly rate of $28.58 with an increase at six 6 month intervals if performance and progress in the program are satisfactory.
