The Stanford Graduate School of Business Library invites applications for the position of Full Stack Library Systems Engineer (Software Developer & System Architect).


The Library, as part of the GSB Research Hub, engages with faculty members, researchers, and students across the lifecycle of teaching, research and scholarship. As a full stack engineer at the GSB Library, you’ll help realize our vision of the library as an environment where our users not only find the information they need, they have the ability to access a wide variety of tools and services to access and manipulate data.

Working in a startup type environment and joining an experienced team ready to share knowledge, the Full Stack Engineer provides application development to enhance the research experience for the following groups:

  • GSB faculty.
  • The GSB PhD program, offering degrees in Accounting; Economic Analysis & Policy; Finance; Marketing; Operations, Information & Technology; Organizational Behavior; and Political Economics.
  • The Master of Business Administration and Master of Science in Management programs at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
  • Researchers, members of the Stanford University community, and other library users.

In this position, you will have the opportunity to work with leading researchers in their fields to understand and help them fulfill their research needs. You will be part of a group that is responsible for building, selecting, maintaining, and monitoring the APIs, tools, and services for workflow, web development, and data indexing that make up our information platform, to facilitate discovery, use and reuse of GSB’s library collections.

Your primary responsibilities include:

  •  Design, implement, and manage new, high quality, high performance web-based applications, databases, and interfaces from initial design and architecture through development, test, and deployment.
  •  Implement and maintain content management systems, including installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and creation of Drupal modules. Develop and deploy upgrade/migration plans for Drupal-based websites.
  •  Perform web platform analytics; identify and work in collaboration with departments and units to resolve strategic and university-wide problems.
  •  Develop and deploy web applications and client-side web interface components that interact with relational database management systems that integrate with Stanford's web, authentication, and authorization infrastructure.
  • Evaluate and implement new programming languages and technologies. Provide life-cycle management for software and code.
  •  Design and document data structures, architecture, configurations, and process flows for websites, web-based applications, and databases. Maintain and update documentation as needed. Create and maintain websites and web-based applications.
  •  Mentor, oversee, and check the work of other staff on technical matters. Conduct security reviews of applications written by other developers. Serve as a technical resource for applications.
  •  Design, coordinate, and troubleshoot integrations, components, and infrastructures to run enterprise-class websites.
  • Research, evaluate, and enforce web standards for usability and accessibility. Develop and enforce Stanford programming and application design standards.
  • Work with a variety of users to gain information, and develop intra-system tradeoffs between different users, as necessary; interact with a diverse client base and outside vendor contracts. Facilitate vendor relationships.
  • Work as a project leader, as needed, for projects of moderate complexity.
  • Be flexible to completing any other additional assigned duties.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  •  Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  •  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  •  Demonstrated significant experience developing for web content management systems such as Drupal 8.
  •  Demonstrated significant experience in developing websites and web applications using open source tools, languages, libraries, and current standards-compliant code.
  •  Proficiency in front-end coding and design (JavaScript and libraries/frameworks such as Node.js and React, CSS and modern styling libraries, HTML5, etc.).
  •  Expertise in designing, developing, testing and deploying applications. Demonstrated ability to write, compile, test, debug, and deploy applications on UNIX-like platforms and web servers.
  •  Knowledge of web analytics tools and related analyses.
  •  Ability to design, build, and manage SQL and NoSQL databases.
  •  Ability to design and implement web services in both local and cloud environments.
  •  Ability to interact positively with and build consensus among a diverse group of colleagues, clients, and senior leadership.
  •  Ability to understand and manage greater web environment.
  •  Ability to design and integrate complex web enterprise systems.
  •  Familiarity with browser devices and platform differences and idiosyncrasies, and ability to develop responsive/adaptive designs.
  •  Understanding of usability, including accessibility issues in web application design.

In addition, our preferred requirements include:

An individual interested in making the world a more equitable place through technology. They will also have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Engineering, or related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant programming experience working across Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) methodologies, DevOps or Agile practices.
  • Experience and familiarity with object-oriented design, 12 factor methods, and test automation.
