The Financial Aid Advisor, under the direction of the Associate Director of Financial Aid, serves as an integral member of the Financial Aid professional team committed to excellent customer service. As such, the candidate supports the team in its efforts to administer all financial aid programs to law students – through counseling and advising, through communication of policies and procedures, through application of appropriate methodology.
Responsibilities:
Review aid applications and complete need analysis for aid eligibility of both incoming students and current students using a thorough understanding of both aid philosophy in general and our SLS institutional philosophy. This includes detailed knowledge of federal need analysis methodologies.
Review detailed financial documents, including tax returns, for accuracy of reported financial information.
Awards aid exercising sound professional judgment keeping in mind both institutional polices and federal policies
Counseling and advising of students on eligibility, policies, financial planning and debt management.
Prepare/review reports to identify changes/conflicting data in database, correct student data records when necessary and communicate those changes appropriately.
Communicate complex financial information to students, agencies, and other appropriate individuals or organizations in a timely and professional manner; provide referral to other departments or individuals when necessary and remain available as a resource for future questions.
Assist with managing financial aid application process and recommends new policies and procedures.
Serve as initial reviewer of our Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) application documents to ensure smooth processing
Assist with maintaining the database as required by the demands of the PeopleSoft system and organization.
Assist with the design, development and maintenance of the SLS financial aid website.
Assist with yield efforts of the Office of Admissions by utilizing financial aid as a recruiting tool.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience in the area of Financial Aid, or combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Experience in need analysis and packaging of student financial aid.
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to exercise tact and discretion when dealing with students, families, and staff.
Expertise in counseling and working with students individually, ability to provide excellent customer service in difficult situations.
Demonstrated ability to set priorities, manage time and workflow and to manage multiple, concurrent high priority projects in a time-pressured environment.
Demonstrated understanding and ability to explain University policy to others, detailed knowledge of financial aid regulations.
Knowledge of multiple financial aid systems, document management systems, and window based environment and office applications.
Demonstrated analytical and quantitative skills, good judgment.

Ability to understand, interpret and apply complex financial aid regulations and need analysis theory.
Ability to act with tact, sensitivity and good judgment.

Prior supervisory experience critical.
