This is a part-time (50% FTE), continuing position. BioSci Careers has an opening for the position of Early Engagement Counselor, specializing in the academic, personal, professional, and career needs of early training students and postdocs.

The Early Engagement Counselor bridges Stanford Biosciences academic training with future career options, helping them develop the academic, personal, and professional skills necessary to become innovative scientists at Stanford and beyond. They connect with students and postdoctoral trainees early in their training to identify and tailor needs to ensure success throughout, especially connecting our most vulnerable trainees to academic and professional support systems. The Early Engagement Counselor develops curriculum and group/individual counseling sessions for trainees and creates inclusive community and belonging within Biosciences departments to support T32 grant and other academic initiatives. Finally, they build connections between industry partners and alumni to both advance trainee academic and career readiness and to strengthen these ties to Stanford Biosciences as a whole.

Working in a student/trainee-first, partnership-focused environment, the Early Engagement Counselor develops new approaches to career counseling in a rapidly changing, dynamic environment, helping trainees develop their own definitions of success. The ideal candidate will be proactive, possess excellent judgment, and demonstrate the capacity to resolve problems using innovative, student/ trainee-informed solutions. A positive attitude, high-level professionalism, growth mindset, significant comfort with new technologies, and a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging beyond lip service are needed in all connections with team members, constituents, and external organizations. Previous experience in a university career community is highly desired.

Duties include:

  • Provide 45-minute, drop-in, and group career counseling appointments.
  • Complete counseling-related and other administrative tasks.
  • Develop and execute strategy and plans for early-engagement initiatives.
  • Build cross-campus and cross-sector relationships.
  • Develop and implement holistic development workshops, clinics, panels, outreach offerings, courses, and guest lectures
  • Coordinate department outreach requests.
  • Support office events

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Higher Education, Business Administration, or related field.
  • At least 5 years’ professional experience in Higher Education or Biosciences-related sector.
  • Familiarity with wellness theory and best practices.
  • Counseling and/or coaching experience; preferably working with student populations.
  • Understanding of the academic, personal, professional, and career development needs relevant to graduate-level, STEM trainees.
  • In depth understanding of the ways in which traditional career services and workplaces have centered whiteness, heteronormativity, and privilege; creative, intentional ideas for disrupting these processes
  • Experience administering and interpreting career assessments.
  • Comfort and skill with developing compelling and practical career resources, workshops, and courses.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Strong communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and management.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Advanced analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite; significant comfort with new technologies.
  • Advanced customer service skills and the ability to develop partnerships within myriad populations.
  • Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.
  • Demonstrated success in following through and completing projects.
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and assign work to others.
  • Ability to routinely and independently exercise sound judgment in making decisions.
  • Demonstrated success in managing complex programs from inception to completion.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the advancement of underrepresented populations and to decentering heteronormativity, whiteness, and privilege.
  • Dedication to a growth mindset and holistic trainee development.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally stand, walk, twist, use fine manipulation, grasp, use a telephone, write by hand, sort and file paperwork, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
