The School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S) is the foundation of a liberal arts education at Stanford. The school encompasses 23 departments and 25 interdisciplinary programs. H&S is home to fundamental and applied research, where free, open, and critical inquiry is pursued across disciplines. The Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society (Stanford PACS) is a global interdisciplinary research center within the School of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University. Stanford PACS develops and shares knowledge to improve philanthropy, strengthen civil society and effect social change and is the publisher of the Stanford Social Innovation Review (SSIR). It supports 7 major research initiatives: Civic Life of Cities Lab, Digital Civil Society Lab, Effective Philanthropy Learning Initiative, Global Civil Society and Sustainable Development Lab, Global Innovation for Impact Lab, Program on Democracy and Internet, and the Polarization and Social Change Lab.

Through our four faculty co-directors and other affiliated researchers and fellows, Stanford PACS has relationships with six schools and twelve departments at Stanford University. This allows us to leverage the intellectual assets of a diverse, world-class faculty across the University and provide a unique platform for knowledge exchange between academia, the nonprofit and for-profit community in Silicon Valley and globally.

Stanford PACS hosts the biennial Philanthropy Innovation Summit for high capacity donors, as well as the First Principles Forum which convenes founders, early employees, and investors in the technology sector interested in advancing and challenging their thinking on giving and impact. Additionally, the center hosts several public and private events throughout the year to connect students, scholars, practitioners, philanthropists, and others in the social impact sector globally.

Stanford PACS is looking for an experienced, strategic and entrepreneurial individual to serve as its Director, Partnerships & Community. This role will play a central role in stewarding the center’s diverse community of philanthropists and social change leaders through special convenings and learning opportunities. The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of experience in philanthropy and/or related fields. They should have the ability to identify new opportunities, initiate new ideas, and establish new relationships while ensuring existing relationships and operations related to our special convenings are moving forward effectively.

Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Director, Partnerships & Community will supervise the strategy and implementation of all convenings and educational programming at Stanford PACS as well as all marketing, branding and outreach related to them. Specifically, this position will be responsible for overseeing the design and execution of our two signature convenings - the Philanthropy Innovation Summit and the First Principles Forum - and related partnerships and relationships, including with host/steering committee members for these convenings and Stanford PACS’ advisory board members. This role will also be responsible for overseeing the budget, sponsorships, and other revenue streams for these special convenings.

This role will have 2 direct reports: (1) the External Relations Coordinator who will implement specific community building activities related to the Summit and First Principles Forum, such as, salons, virtual convenings, newsletters and other communication; (2) the Events & Partnerships Manager who will lead logistics for all convenings, including the management of select outside vendors, to ensure effective operations in these areas of responsibility.

The Director of Partnerships & Community will also collaborate with the Executive Director on advisory board engagement and related activities and will be a member of the senior leadership team for the Center.

This is a 100% FTE, continuing, exempt position. This position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting (hybrid of working on-site and off-site), subject to operational need.

CORE DUTIES*:

  • In partnership with the Executive Director, provide strategic leadership to create a development plan to grow annual revenue from special convenings and executive style education programs
  • Lead the development and execution of the Philanthropy Innovation Summit and First Principles Forum, as well as year-long community building activities and other outreach activities..
  • Recommend, manage and execute integrated marketing plans/programs and strategies to meet business objectives. This includes developing a pipeline of new corporate sponsor and foundation prospects to support programs and initiatives..
  • Develop and manage the brand strategy for individual convening(s) incorporating appropriate channels (i.e., web presence, digital and print).
  • Manage market research and campaign/program/service/event analysis used to inform decisions regarding strategic marketing direction, audience segmentation and targeting.
  • Assess opportunities and track market trends. Recommend marketing improvements based on findings.
  • Support the Executive Director in stewarding the Advisory Board by planning the bi-annual board meetings and materials.
  • Supervise staff and contractors as assigned.
  • As a member of the senior leadership team, responsible for overall organizational growth, development, culture and values.
  • Oversee program budget, goals, and objectives in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Guide event planning and execution, as needed, to support marketing objectives.
  • Manage vendors on specific projects.

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and ten years of relevant experience; or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of philanthropy and the social sector.
  • Significant experience in designing and implementing high-level convenings and learning opportunities for high net worth individuals.
  • Experience with identifying and closing sponsorship and other revenue generating opportunities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and lead cross-functional teams toward a common goal.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment under deadlines with minimal guidance.
  • Experience with market research and data analysis.
  • Understands how to implement effective marketing programs across multiple channels.
  • Creative problem solver with strong critical thinking skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
  • Prior experience in planning and managing program budgets.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Significant prior experience in community building and/or relationship management with high net worth individuals.
  • Experience working within an academic institution and/or a complex multi-departmental professional business office setting.
  • Exceptional relationship management skills.
  • Creative, adaptable and entrepreneurial, with a bias for action.
  • Supervisory experience.
