The Director of Policy Initiatives, Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Institute (HAI), reports to the Deputy Director of HAI and is responsible for leading HAI’s engagement with governments and civil society organizations, developing mutually beneficial relationships that advance the mission, purpose, and agenda of HAI.  This role requires strategic leadership, effective management, and hands-on work to conceptualize, launch, and manage a strategic program that promotes effective cooperation and engagement to advance a human-centered approach to AI governance, regulatory, and policy issues worldwide.

 

Major Responsibilities

Partnerships with governments - at all levels and both domestic and international - as well as other universities and civil society organizations will foster a rich global dialogue around pressing challenges in ensuring that AI is developed and deployed in a way that benefits humans and society.  The Director will conceptualize, develop, and execute high-impact programs working with various external groups that will educate and engage stakeholders, as well as gather input to inform the Institute’s work and maximize its real world impact including by, for example, spearheading initiatives to inform global AI governance and policy.

 

Successful candidates will have substantial policy acumen and direct experience conceptualizing and launching international policy initiatives, including identifying likeminded champions in influential national governments and other external organizations, building effective, inclusive, and transparent coalitions, and managing outcomes-oriented multistakeholder processes.  A driven and entrepreneurial individual will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to informing the global AI policy and regulatory environment in pursuit of HAI’s mission of advancing AI research, education, policy, and practice to improve the human condition.

 

The Director will hire and manage a team that supports government and civil society engagement and policy initiatives that will have significant cross-university scope and impact.  The Director is responsible for compliance with the University’s rules and regulations in regard to all programs and works within existing University priorities and guidelines as well as establishing consistent coordination with the Office of Government and Community Relations, as appropriate.

 

The Director is expected to contribute to HAI strategic planning and to lead planning external engagements, typically involving considerable ambiguity, complexity and scope. The Director may be assigned additional tasks.

 

Leadership Style, Organizational Aspects, and Requirements

The Director will be responsible for developing an organization to accomplish the Institute’s objectives for developing and implementing partnerships. The Director represents HAI across Stanford and externally in diverse venues and must be an effective ambassador and communicator. The Director must develop excellent relationships with other organizations across campus including Office of Government and Community Relations, Dean of Research, Communications, and other institutions such as Freeman Spogli, Hoover, and Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research.

 

The Director is expected to be responsive, transparent, and creative. The Director must embody a collaborative leadership model, getting input from broad and diverse stakeholders and constituents—discovering interests and capabilities of faculty, opportunities and challenges faced by governments, and strategic directions of civil society organizations—and then crafting programs that build upon those ideas. The Director is expected to display the highest standards of integrity and comply with the letter and spirit of all Stanford University policies.

JOB PURPOSE:

Direct programs or functions of university wide impact in consultation with senior leadership.


CORE DUTIES*:

  • Lead strategic planning and analysis for complex university programs or functions with significant business, regulatory and/or technical challenges requiring subject matter expertise. Manage and direct the development, implementation, administration and evaluation of programs or functions. Monitor trends and recommend programs or functions direction.

  • Act as the subject matter expert for School/unit and/or the university regarding the interpretation, implementation and compliance with policies and regulations. Recommend actions and/or resolve complex issues that span organizational boundaries.

  • Represent the program or function at the university level and/or to external/internal stakeholders and constituencies.

  • Direct and manage outreach strategy that may include relationship development, communications, and compliance.

  • Oversee or supervise staff in the development and implementation of programs or functions.

  • May develop and/or oversee budgets; manage finances including monitoring, analyzing, forecasting, and reporting.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and ten years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to influence and motivate constituencies which could span multiple organizational boundaries.

  • Demonstrated excellent planning, organizational and analytical skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to make sound business decisions using good business judgment and innovative and creative problem-solving.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage financial, organizational and staff resources.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills with the ability to cultivate professional and business partnerships.

  • Relevant subject matter expertise.

  • Strong project planning and management skills.

  • Experience in or knowledge of business process improvement methodology.

  • Ability to act independently and as part of a team.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.

  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.

  • Occasionally use a telephone.

  • Rarely lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.
