Job Summary

 

Alumni Relations is part of External Relations, a collaborative joint department, composed of a fundraising group, an alumni relations group, and an operations group, which work together to build and maintain relationships with Stanford Law School alumni, parents, and friends to advance the school’s mission. This is a growing team with several new positions being added this year to support the evolving needs of the alumni community. This moment of evolution is an opportunity for the right candidate to explore new ways to engage alumni communities and enhance traditional alumni programming. 

 

Fostering a collaborative working environment through training and personal example is key. Expect regular contact with the Dean, Associate Deans, and faculty to plan, develop and implement a robust series of premier campus and regional programs leveraging the expertise and thought leadership of SLS faculty and alumni. Key partners will include colleagues in SLS Major Gifts, Annual Giving, and Donor Relations who will often be involved in events, volunteer management, and faculty programs. This includes managing the partnership with the Annual Giving team on Alumni Weekend, which incorporates reunion giving campaigns for each celebrating class. 

 

To ensure a coordinated approach across the school and the university, the Director will also need to develop relationships with other SLS and university departments, programs, and academic centers that interact and engage alumni and volunteers. The Director will be expected to actively network with fellow professional schools, the Office of Public Affairs, and the Stanford Alumni Association to ensure that SLS is fully leveraging resources to maximize alumni engagement with the broader university and involvement in showcase events for the Stanford community.

Job Purpose

 

Reporting to the Associate Dean for External Relations, the Director of Alumni Relations is a member of the Stanford Law School Office of External Relations’ strategic leadership team. They are responsible for the overall planning, implementation, and management of programs and services meant to develop and enhance long-term relationships between and among the school’s alumni, students, faculty, broader community, and the school. Key engagement and service activities under the direction of the SLS Alumni Relations team include global alumni chapters and regional events, student/alumni programs, alumni affinity groups, virtual programs/webinars, online engagement, and several high-profile alumni events, including the law school’s annual Alumni Weekend and Board of Visitors meetings. The Alumni Relations team also manages communications to alumni communities all over the world. In close collaboration with the SLS Office of Communications, the Director will also be a key player in issues management, as well as enhancing the online presence of SLS alumni and community events.

In addition to creating and delivering a wide range of programs and premier events focused on engaging alumni and friends in the life of the law school, the Alumni Relations team manages numerous volunteers annually who work to improve and build upon the connections these constituencies have with one another and the school. The Director is responsible for managing one of the school’s highest level volunteer boards and committees, the Stanford Law School Board of Visitors, a group of approximately 70 alumni serving as advisors to the Dean and ambassadors for SLS, and may be asked to support other alumni committees and task forces convened as needed and aligned with key engagement initiatives for the law school.

Core Duties

  • Lead and drive the overall strategy for Stanford Law School alumni engagement and community building as part of an integrated external relations team. This includes full responsibility for the development, implementation, and assessment of programs, events, and services designed to increase alumni engagement with the school.
  • Develop strategies and plans to implement outreach programs that build on the law school and university’s reputation, visibility and advocacy of its alumni, students, and thought-leaders around the world. 
  • Manage the strategic planning for the Alumni Relations team and report quarterly on the team’s progress towards goals.
  • Overall responsibility for department operations including the recruitment, management, development, performance and retention of staff.
  • Set departmental budget, goals, and objectives in alignment with organizational goals, in consultation with the Associate Dean for External Relations.  
  • Manage and staff the Stanford Law School Board of Visitors and oversee the deployment of this key group of volunteer leaders in support of the school. This includes managing the identification, recruitment and training of law school alumni to serve as members of the Board of Visitors, as well as other volunteer roles. 
  • Provide strategic oversight of alumni marketing and communications efforts.
  • Prepare event briefings and talking points for the Dean, Associate Dean, faculty, and lead volunteers for all high-profile alumni events and board meetings. 
  • Provide leadership and support on issues/projects related to law school and university alumni initiatives, representing the Law School at the campus-wide monthly Alumni Relations Directors’ meeting.

 

*The Director of Alumni Relations may also be called upon to assume or delegate responsibility for special projects as needed and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Required

 

  • Bachelor’s degree and eight years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.  Experience working in a university setting, and an advanced degree (JD or MBA) preferred.

 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Experience in and responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating programs designed to reach, serve, and engage university constituencies.
  • Excellent strategic, organizational, and project management skills, and the ability to simultaneously plan and execute multiple projects.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent management skills, including coaching and developing staff.
  • Strong track record as relationship builder and collaborator.
  • Tact and proven ability to manage diverse staff in different functions.
  • Strong ability to understand customer needs, show good judgment and diplomacy, and a high tolerance for ambiguity.

Preferred:

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Experience in and responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating programs designed to reach, serve, and engage law school and university constituencies.
  • Ability to build effective long-term relationships both internally and externally and the ability to articulate and advocate for institutional goals clearly.
  • Strong interpersonal, team, and leadership skills; tact and flexibility in working with diverse population groups. Well-developed leadership abilities and a willingness to take risks and solve problems creatively.
  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated experience with volunteer development and oversight.
  • Proven decision-making skills and the ability to understand and solve complex questions.
  • A willingness to adapt to changing priorities and to working in a complex, decentralized organization.
  • Must be a goal-oriented and self-motivated individual who can demonstrate accountability, initiative, energy, creativity, and focus in a rapidly changing and intellectually stimulating environment.
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, and flexibility is highly desired. Knowledge of Stanford University preferred.
  • Familiarity with fundraising and/or donor relations best practices a plus.
  • Computer proficiency and the ability to learn new systems.

Certificates and Licenses Required

 

Valid California Non-commercial Class Driver’s License.

 

Working Conditions

 

  • Occasional work on evenings and weekends.
  • May work outdoors.
  • Some local or domestic travel.
  • A remote or hybrid worker arrangement may be considered for candidates with the appropriate background and experience, with a preference for candidates based in the Bay Area, Southern California, or the New York or Washington, DC metropolitan areas.
