University IT (UIT) is seeking a Director of Strategic Communications to serve as the senior communications leader responsible for developing, leading, and executing on strategic marketing and communications plans to meet organizational objectives.


The position will lead and be responsible for the communications and marketing strategies and functions for UIT, collaborating closely with senior leaders across the University IT organization to ensure consistency, alignment and cohesion of the UIT’s marketing and communications messages across its seven units and to its broader university and hospital audiences.


This innovative, creative, and forward-thinking leader is responsible for developing long-term communications and marketing strategies to help UIT increase brand reach, enhance perception, and strengthen its place as a critical enabler of the university’s success. The leader will have a passion for technology, a curiosity for how it enables our world, and shown experience presenting technology services, solutions and innovations that engage audiences.



This leader will have responsibility for:

  • Developing and maintaining effective and holistic messaging strategies to Stanford faculty, students, and staff distributed across the university, as well as the hospital communities
  • Engaging with the Chief Information Officer, Chief of Staff, and other leadership members across the University IT organization to develop long-term strategic communications goals and priorities that support the objectives and priorities of the organization
  • Leading communication programs in support of organizational branding, goals, and priorities
  • Developing and implementing communications and service awareness activities that enable University IT programs, services, and/or products
  • Delivering communications programs, strategies and campaigns across traditional and digital platforms, using success metrics to refine them over time
  • Developing, empowering, evaluating, and leading an eight-person communications team of staff that is part of the Office of the CIO, and managing contractors and outside vendors to ensure effective operations.



Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree and ten years of relevant experience; or a combination of education and relevant experience.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Consistent track record to achieve an organization's vision, values and programs through marketing initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience using integrated marketing strategies to achieve goals.
  • Strong marketing leadership skills and the ability to persuade and influence decision-makers across all levels of an organization.
  • Exceptional strategic thinking and leadership skills.
  • Proven people manager, with the ability to empower, grow and train staff across functions.
  • Outstanding ability to advance a large volume of work (40+ simultaneous projects and an average of 65 independent requests) across the team through strong delegation, mentoring and organizational skills.
  • Prior experience in planning and running department budget.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven experience addressing senior managers.

  • None



  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, speaking. Occasionally grasp forcefully, writing by hand.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork.

This position is eligible for full-time remote work from any location in the US, and may require periodic visits to campus once travel restrictions are lifted.
