CORE DUTIES

  • Manage the International and Advanced Degree career program, including analyzing and managing the effectiveness of program policies and content.
  • Critically analyze student needs, market trends, and law school and university guidelines to create program policies and resolve substantial issues, using in-depth knowledge of the legal industry.
  • Develop and implement programming (virtual, in-person) and make strategic recommendations for future programs to meet the career needs of law students interested in pursuing private sector legal careers.  This includes workshops on job search techniques and interview preparation, networking events, career fairs and general education on the U.S. legal industry.
  • Develop resources, guides, web content, and other student-facing communications to facilitate career exploration and job searches.
  • Directly advise advanced degree and JD students and alumni on career development and opportunities, including but not limited to reviewing resumes, cover letters and job applications, conducting mock interviews, and coaching on career related decisions.
  • Establish and manage outreach programs with alumni and employers to assess and cultivate job opportunities and foster professional development opportunities, relationships with external community and university liaisons.
  • Develop the Advanced Degree & International Career Program budget and manage related financial processes.
  • Work closely with other OCS staff on career related programming, services and communications.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with other law school and university departments to support the needs of students.  Collaborate with other departments to enhance counseling, programming and resources for law students.
  • Develop and foster contacts with national and regional professional organizations, including the Bay Area Legal Recruiting Association and the National Association for Law Placement, to represent Stanford Law School, formulate policies, and enhance programming and services.
  • Evaluate and determine recommendations on technology and other career-related external resources. Negotiate with resource vendors.

Minimum Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.  Knowledge of legal hiring markets and at least 3 years of experience in a legal environment as an attorney, law school counselor, legal recruiter, or professional development advisor preferred.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills to review and analyze complex information.
  • Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Advanced customer service skills.
  • Relevant computer systems/technology experience.
  • Understanding of financial transactions.
  • Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with international law and international students.
  • Candidate should be skilled in cultural competency and have experience working with individuals from a wide array of backgrounds.  Sensitivity to diversity of student body and career interests.
  • Previous advising and counseling experience desired, but not required.
  • Experience in and responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating programs designed to reach, serve, and engage diverse population groups.
  • Ability to build effective long-term relationships both internally and externally and the ability to articulate and advocate for institutional goals clearly.
  • Strong interpersonal, team, and leadership skills; tact and flexibility in working with diverse population groups.
  • Attention to detail and project management skills are all key for this role. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage time effectively and handle multiple assignments under pressure with frequent interruptions.
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, and flexibility is highly desired.

Working Conditions

  • Occasional work on evenings and weekends.
  • Some local or domestic travel.
  • A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for candidates with the appropriate background and experience, with a preference for candidates based in the Bay Area.
