MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in health physics, radiation physics, medical physics, nuclear engineering, or related field.  Eight years of applicable experience in health physics  and program management performing duties similar to those listed above, with progressively increasing responsibility for personnel management.

 

Desired Education & Experience:

Master’s or doctoral degree strongly preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be able to meet the standards found in 10 CFR 35 regarding approval by the state of California Radiologic Health Branch (RHB) as an RSO for a licensee with a broad scope radioactive materials license (RML).
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills.
    • Manage and provide functional direction and training in the overall application of research radiation safety programs.
    • Manage and supervise health physics program staff in a diverse, fast-moving research and health care enterprise.
    • Direct and oversee the University’s laser safety program; supervise the laser safety officer.
  • In-depth knowledge of federal and state regulation compliance aspects of radiation safety programs.
    • Prepare compliance reports and maintain records of program operations that are in a form suitable for inspection by regulatory agencies and can be retrieved and distributed.
    • Actively participate in the work of professional societies and governmental agencies in standards setting, education and regulatory development related to radiation protection, especially as related to the academic research setting.
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating and managing a health physics program with broad-scope license, including budget needs, long-range goals, and    department objectives.
    • Working closely with the RSO, develop a working knowledge of routine operational and strategic issues in all areas of health physics.
    • Execute established policies and procedures of radiation protection and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as institutional requirements.
    • Advise researchers and experimenters on radiation safety issues and controls on new or continuing research projects by maintaining field presence in support of radiation protection programs, performing calculations, and assisting researchers, engineers, and physicists in avoiding or minimizing radiation exposure and equipment damage.
  • Experience with requirements of monitoring and overseeing the disposal of radioactive materials.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to cultivate strong and collaborative relationships inside and outside the organization
    • Develop and implement internal quality assurance/quality control programs to assure effectiveness and efficiency in the programs.
    • Provide managerial, technical and administrative support to the University Administrative Panel on Radiation Safety and the local control committees (clinical radiation safety, non-human use radiation safety, and laser safety).
    • Develop, maintain and ensure execution of radiation safety training programs.
    • Provide lectures on radiation safety issues for personnel and patients to attending clinicians, fellows, residents, nurses, technologists and staff in Nuclear Medicine, Radiology, Surgery, and other departments within the Stanford School of Medicine, Stanford Healthcare, and other organizations.
    • Develop and maintain health physics program information on the EH&S web site.
    • Conduct comprehensive, independent compliance assurance reviews of radiation safety programs. Develop and implement safety policies and procedures related to radiation protection regulations.
    • Recommend and implement improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize the radiation hazard.
    • Provide instructions and conduct research seminars on radiation safety and physics to staff and academic audience. May perform research and development and publish papers in refereed journals.
    • Provide training and coaching to students, technicians, and health physicists.
  • Ability to lead professionally in emergency/crisis situations.
    • Provide 24-hour emergency response support, as needed.
    • Develop working knowledge of routine operational issues in all Environmental Health and Safety program areas.  Maintain familiarity with emergency cross training procedures, develop competency program for all persons in the health physics section of EH&S.

 

Certifications and Licenses:

  • Certified Health Physicist (CHP).

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Occasionally stand/walk; frequently sitting; rarely kneel/crawl; occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders; frequently grasp lightly/fine manipulation; rarely grasp forcefully; frequently perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds; rarely lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-40 pounds or more.
  • Able to wear a respirator and perform duties while wearing.
  • Auditory acuity to hear clicks and buzzers for detection equipment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid California non-commercial class driver license. Ability to drive day and night.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May be exposed to radioactive materials and/or ionizing radiation, Class IIIB or IV lasers, magnetic or electromagnetic fields, and lead.
  • May be exposed to biohazards (urine, blood, feces) while working with patients and/or animals in  emergency and operating rooms, and interventional radiology facilities.  Must gown up for sterile environments.
  • May require travel to off     campus locations.
