Established in 1989, the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics (SCBE) is an interdisciplinary hub for faculty who do research, teaching, and service on topics in bioethics and medical humanities. SCBE and its faculty have been widely recognized for leadership on a range of issues.

SCBE faculty teach throughout Stanford, from large undergraduate courses to ethics courses taken by all medical students. SCBE offers training for medical students who choose to specialize in biomedical ethics and medical humanities, as well a highly-rated research ethics seminar taken by over 350 graduate students and fellows a year. Faculty provide a wide array of educational and training opportunities for residents, fellows, nurses and other medical staff. Additionally, faculty conduct guest lectures in other departments and divisions across the School of Medicine. The Center also provides educational opportunities for the general public.

OUR MISSION

  • To conduct innovative empirical bioethics research (in the core areas of genomics, end-of-life care, cultural diversity, neuroscience, the changing health care marketplace, and technology development)
  • To provide leadership in bioethics education for students and faculty in medicine, the Humanities and Sciences, and the professional schools, at Stanford and nationally
  • To apply ethical reasoning to moral issues in medicine, including basic science, translational biomedical research, patient care, and the development of medical technology
  • To contribute to national and international policy discussions by building a community of professionals dedicated to formulating effective responses to contemporary ethical issues
  • To advance and preserve a compassionate and humanistic perspective on the practice of medicine, in order to improve health care for adults and children
     

SCBE seeks a Communications Manager to support a wide range of communications and outreach activities that advance the Center’s mission and visibility. This role will develop and produce content across multiple platforms, including the website, newsletters, and social media, to highlight faculty research, educational programs, and public events. The position also supports communications for lectures, workshops, and conferences, helping to engage diverse audiences such as students, clinicians, researchers, policymakers, and the public.
Working closely with faculty, program staff, and communications partners across Stanford, the Communications Professional will contribute to the development and implementation of communications approaches that increase awareness of SCBE’s work. The role involves managing multiple projects, producing high-quality written and digital content, coordinating with vendors, and supporting the execution of events and communications products such as reports and newsletters.

This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented and collaborative communicator who enjoys translating complex ideas into accessible content and contributing to the impact of a dynamic academic center.

 

Core duties include*:

  • Participate in development of communication deliverables in an area of expertise for a program. 
  • Develop communications of moderate complexity for various content delivery channels. 
  • Produce materials according to defined requirements using software applications and mediums. 
  • Work with vendors to obtain information to evaluate quality, process, and costs to support vendor selection. 
  • Maintain knowledge by attending webinars, conferences, networking etc. to remain at the forefront of current industry standards, trends and technology. 
  • May compile data, illustrations, photos, and pictures for assignments. 
  • Work in collaboration with Institutional Communicators on media relations content and other areas.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Proficiency in Adobe Experience Manager (AEM), Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Adobe Stock, Adobe Premiere, MailChimp, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint.  
  • Experience with graphic design, web design, and multi-channel communications, ideally in a university or research setting.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):  

Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal communications groups across campus.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills.
  • Capacity to synthesize materials and communicate information in a manner easily understood.
  • Experience with managing projects to specifications and to meet expected deadlines.
  • Ability to perform detailed work with high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, speaking.
  • Occasionally grasp forcefully, writing by hand.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork.

The expected pay range for this position is $90,174 to $109,773 per annum.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of the salary or hourly wage the university reasonably expects to pay for a position upon hire. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
