Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Prior supervisory or management level experience in a police / public safety department (sworn or non-sworn experience).
  • Well-versed in the practices of personnel management and training.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to influence and motivate constituencies which could span organizational boundaries.
  • Familiarity with each of the programmatic areas, preferably direct experience either performing the work or managing others who performed the work.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to implement the Incident Management System.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective community and public relations.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire others as well as hold others accountable.
  • Sound supervisory practices.    Proficient in setting goals and providing direction to both civilian and administrative staff. Ability to plan, organize, coordinate, direct, and supervise employees.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.  Able to provide timely, accurate, and complete monthly reports as directed by the Chief, Asst Chief or Captain.
  • Demonstrated excellent planning, organizational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to teach and supervise and provide mentoring relationships.  Ability and desire to take a leadership role within the department.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a group.  Ability to use sound judgment and independence in determining priorities.
  • Ability to communicate with others and to assimilate and understand information in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment and complete work in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Commitment to the development of personnel and the department.
  • Flexibility and calmness in managing a large work volume with minimal supervision under tight deadlines and in pressure situations.
  • Ability to keep sensitive information strictly confidential at all times.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to conduct research and translate knowledge into written form.
  • Ability to interpret complex laws and apply them in practical situations.
  • Ability to adapt to changing conditions.  Ability to evaluate and manage critical incidents and special events.  Ability to act effectively and with sound judgment in emergency situations.
  • Willingness to promote the department’s Core Values and ROOTS philosophies, and to uphold department standards. 
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally use a telephone.
  • Occasionally lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-30 pounds.

Working Conditions
  • Flexibility and the willingness to adapt to changing conditions and to accommodate the needs of the Department and University.
  • Ability to accommodate schedule adjustments in order to meet staffing and supervisory needs, including the ability to work swing and mid-night shifts.
  • Willingness to work special events on scheduled days off or after regular shift hours, sometimes with little or no advance notice.
  • Willingness and ability to respond to emergency and critical conditions with short notice.
Minimum Education and Experience Required
  • Minimum of 5 years of satisfactory, continuous and recent management experience with a law enforcement agency or a security related company.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or University (equivalent work history will be considered in lieu of a degree).

  • Demonstrates the ability to work well with Stanford colleagues and clients, and with external organizations.
  • Promote a Culture of Safety:  demonstrates the commitment to personal responsibility and value for safety; communicates safety concerns; uses and promotes safe behaviors based on training and lessons learned.
  • Subject to and expected to comply with all applicable University and department policies and procedures, including but not limited to the personnel policies and other policies found in the University’s Administrative Guide and Department of Public Safety General Orders.
Special Requirements
  • Applicant must pass a complete background investigation including a polygraph examination, fingerprint check, and a search of local, state, and national files for criminal history.
  • Ability to pass a physical demands test relevant to the job requirements.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license.
  • Must be available/reachable by phone during non-working hours.  Must be able and willing to respond to and work large-scale special events as well as unplanned critical incidents.

  • Written submission, Presentation, and oral board interview with department personnel
  • Background, including polygraph
  • Personal Interview with the Director of Public Safety
