The School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S) is the foundation of a liberal arts education at Stanford. The school encompasses 24 departments and 24 interdisciplinary programs. H&S is home to fundamental and applied research, where free, open, and critical inquiry is pursued across disciplines. As the university’s largest school, H&S serves as the foundation of a Stanford undergraduate education no matter which discipline students pursue as a major. Department/Program Description: The integration of the practical knowledge of theater-making with the humanistic knowledge of the history and theory of performance is central to the vision of the Theater & Performance Studies Department (TAPS) at Stanford. At TAPS, theory and practice are inextricably linked and mutually reinforcing. We prepare our students to become scholar-artists fluent in both of these languages. If the idea of the scholar-artist is at the core of our department’s vision, then teaching is at the center of our mission. We teach graduate and undergraduate students in academic classes and seminars, in acting and dance studios, and by mentoring them in their creative work and scholarly research. Creating the context for probing dialogues and participatory experiences in our classes is essential to guiding students into discoveries of how the performing arts can be utilized as a fresh platform for illuminating pressing social issues and paths of change.

 

Position Summary: Stanford University Department of Theater and Performance Studies (TAPS) is seeking a Carpenter Specialist Leader to provide leadership and technical expertise for all departmental events.  The Carpenter Specialist Leader works in collaboration with the Technical Director and Head Carpenter to ensure the successful engineering, realization, and safety of all scenic, sound, video, rigging and automation needs. The Carpenter Specialist Leader will take the lead in the day to day workflow of the scenic construction shop working with student and temporary labor to meet the scenic, sound and video needs of each event supported by the department.  This collaborative position will interact with professional and student designers, faculty, staff and both graduate and undergraduate students and needs to be a team player dedicated to safety. Other duties may also be assigned. Experience with 3D printers, vectorworks, automation, IT networking, and other theatrical technologies is not a requirement but will be taken into consideration. The work schedule includes evening, weekend, and holiday hours.

This is a 100% FTE, continuing bargaining unit position reporting to the Technical Director. This position will be based on the Stanford campus.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Employees in this classification are assigned the responsibility to lead and direct two or more other Carpenter Specialists in addition to performing the duties specified for the Carpenter, Specialist (Cabinetmaker) classification. Employees at this level do not have supervisory authority over other employees and are not expected to exercise independent judgment on final decisions regarding quality or quantity of work produced by such employees, or personnel actions such as hiring, promotion, discharge or disciplinary measures.

 

CORE DUTIES:

The duties listed under this section are designed to provide a representative sampling of key tasks and/or responsibilities associated with the job.  They are not intended to be a complete list of all the duties performed by employees in the classification.

·       Assign and explain tasks to workers; Inspect work for conformance with specifications.

·       Inspect work for conformance with specifications.

·       Train employees to meet quality and quantity standards.

·       Advise supervisor of work progress.

·       Promote adherence to safety rules.

·       Record information on the work performed by others, maintains inventory records and other appropriate records.

·       Develop and create estimates for department projects to be used by the department and customers.

·       Recommend improvements in work processes.

·       Purchase materials and supplies.

·       May perform any of the duties described in the Carpenter, Specialist specification or other duties as assigned.

·       Ensure that safety rules are followed.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

·       Must have sufficient experience to qualify as a journey level cabinetmaker, with approximately four years actual work at the trade.  This may include time spent in apprenticeship or in vocational training or a combination of equivalent education and work experience.

·       Must be skilled in the use of the tools, materials, and equipment of the cabinetmaker trade.

  • Requires that employees be skilled in tasks they direct and be able to solve task-related problems.
  • Must have the ability to affect good working relationships with requesters and other employees.
  • Must be able to follow written and/or oral instructions and communicate those instructions to others.
  • Must also be knowledgeable of applicable ES&H and OSHA rules, regulations and requirements.
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills (both verbal and written).  

 

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

·       Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C Non-commercial Driver’s License.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

·       May be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends, including Holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions.

·       Required to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

·       When conducting university business, must comply with the California Vehicle Code and Stanford University driving requirements.

·       Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrates the ability to work well with Stanford colleagues and clients and with external organizations.

·       Promote Culture of Safety: Demonstrates commitment to personal responsibility and value for safety; communicates safety concerns; uses and promotes safe behaviors based on training and lessons learned.

The expected pay range for this position is $50.20 (Step 1) to $60.72 (Step 10) per hour.  Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
