To be successful in this role, you will bring:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Broad and deep understanding of the communications role in institutions. Experience communicating at all levels and for all audiences.
- Strong influencing, negotiating, and relationship management skills.
- Ability to earn credibility and influence opinion leaders.
- Understanding of strategic communications principles.
- Capacity to write and synthesize complex materials and communicate highly technical or nuanced information in a manner easily understood.
- Ability to guide cross-functions towards a common goal.
- Ability to discern a strategy to move forward and make or escalate decisions as appropriate.
You are:
- A strong reporter and writer. You have an eye for detail and an ear for memorable quotes. You can write fast-turnaround, breaking news stories as well as features and profiles that require more time and effort to pull together.
- A storyteller. You’re able to distill a lecture or event into a story highlighting their main points.
- Flexible. You’re available to be on campus and to work the occasional evening or weekend as required.
- Organized. You’re able to juggle multiple projects and to meet deadlines.
- Enterprising. A go-getter who can cultivate and maintain strong relationships with faculty, staff, and students in various organizations across campus and develop a steady pipeline of story tips and ideas.
- Self-motivated. Someone who enjoys being part of a collegial and collaborative team but who also works well independently.
In addition, preferred requirements include:
Prior work experience in journalism or higher education preferred but not required.
