SCHOOL/UNIT DESCRIPTION:

Stanford University's Precourt Institute for Energy concentrates the talents of the university on energy research and education, from basic science and technology to policy and business. We disseminate research results and help the university develop energy-literate leaders as part of its educational mission. We also build collaborations globally with industry, other research institutions, government, and civic organizations in pursuit of sustainable, affordable, secure energy for all people.

 

Stanford Bits & Watts Initiative is a new initiative of the Precourt Institute for Energy established to enable the grid of the 21st century through holistic research, education, and convening.  With an emphasis on private sector interactions, the Stanford Bits & Watts Initiative fosters cutting-edge energy research and provides support for academic education to facilitate the global transformation of the electric power industry.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Stanford Bits & Watts Initiative facilitates interactions between companies and other organizations, and Stanford’s faculty and graduate students, working on system level issues related to the electric power transformation.  This position has responsibility for managing and executing many activities in support of the Bits & Watts’ goals.  The goals of the Bits & Watts Initiative include developing meaningful new research directions, managing and retaining current members, recruiting new members, coordinating and supporting faculty-company interactions, performing administrative functions, and supporting a comprehensive energy community at Stanford.

 

In achieving these goals, the Program Manager will manage and execute programs and tasks such as responding to requests from member companies and faculty; ensuring a sustained level of engagement between faculty, grad students, and member companies; planning events and activities ranging from large conferences to small meetings; administering the Fellow-Mentor-Advisor Program and seed research awards; arranging graduate student recruiting events; managing the Bits & Watts budget and financial transactions; invoicing members and tracking payments; maintaining the company and people database; maintaining and updating the website, helping to launch the Bits & Watts graduate fellowships and Executive Education offering; providing support for international and US visiting scientists; and assuring that members receive invitations to all appropriate Stanford events. This position reports to the Executive Director of Stanford Bits & Watts Initiative.

 

CORE DUTIES:

  • Independently implement, administer and evaluate day-to-day activities of the unit, function or program by identifying and executing tasks and objectives, making recommendations that impact policies and programs, and assigning resources to achieve the goals of the program.
  • Collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program or function.
  • Analyze and interpret policies; develop, revise and implement procedures for program or function.
  • Represent the program or function as the key contact and subject matter expert within the department, unit or school. Commit resources and provide information and/or training. May also represent the program or function to external/internal stakeholders and constituencies.
  • Organize and/or participate in outreach activities that may include developing communications and training, planning/promoting events and/or conferences.
  • May participate in development of budgets, monitor, and approve expenditures. May perform limited forecasting and provide recommendations that determine the budget.
  • May direct staff to perform various tasks and assignments. May also supervise staff.

 

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

 

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with the fields of energy and the environment.
  • Event planning.
  • Familiarity with Stanford University policies, procedures, and systems.
  • Federal or California State Grant development and proposal management experience is desired, but not required.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize own work and multi-task.
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and ownership of projects.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment routinely and independently make decisions.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and as part of a team.
  • Relevant subject matter knowledge.
  • Ability to direct the work of others, for jobs requiring supervision.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally use a telephone.
  • Rarely lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • General office environment.
