• Conduct Biosafety Specific Assessments of laboratories working at the BS-2 and 3 levels including both rDNA and infectious agents (over 700 protocols reviewed each year with more than 200 BSL-2 laboratories). Must be capable of coordinating written research proposals with on-site analysis of work-related issues including biohazardous agents and procedures being used. Upon discussion with laboratory personnel of projects technical details, determine if proper procedures are in place. Decide if project-specific trainings and/or medical surveillance should be done. Decide if appropriate approvals have been obtained. Work with laboratory personnel and PI to correct any deficiencies or unsafe practices.
• Conduct reviews of proposed human clinical trials using rDNA and/or infectious agents. Work with the Stanford University IRBs and other institutional compliance panels to ensure comprehensive reviews are done in harmony.
• As needed, function as voting member and in the administrative function for Administrative Panel on Biosafety (APB) – all research using BSL-2/3 agents, or non-exempt rDNA, must receive approval by the APB
• Recommend and implement specific ABSL-2 training as needed; coordinate programmatic updates with needs of research personnel
• Perform as Biosafety resource and provide oversight for Administrative Panel on Laboratory Animal Care (APLAC/IACUC) and Stem Cell Research Oversight Panel (SCRO) – provide technical expertise and recommendations for the use of Biohazardous materials in cells, animals, hazards associated with zoonotic agents.
• Coordinate approvals among APB and APLAC, SCRO and IRB.
• Review protocols requiring EH&S approval for submission to DoD, private research foundations or others as needed.
• Ability to analyze and implement changes and new regulatory or guidance documents from local, state and federal agencies (e.g. NIH, CDC, OSHA, FDA, WHO, FAA). Communicate with agencies (regarding regulatory or guidance document interpretation and implementation related to APB oversight
• Participate in review and analysis of exposure and incident reports related to Biosafety, including Medical Surveillance involvement.
• Serve as technical expert related to Biosafety issues for Occupational Health – included are potential work with infectious agents, accidental exposures to infectious agents, rDNA, blood borne pathogens. Work with Stanford University Occupational Health Center staff to address exposure risks.
• Provide Biosafety evaluation and input for reproductive evaluations, mold issues, communicable diseases and others as needed.

Education & Experience:
• Advanced degree in a related scientific discipline and 5+ years of hands-on research in a molecular/cellular biology laboratory; Ph.D. preferred
• Background in Microbiology and/or Virology a plus
• Experience with animal research a plus

• Basic understanding of biosafety principles and practices and related knowledge of pertinent scientific fields to which this background can be applied.

• Excellent communication skills in English and the ability to present information clearly and succinctly verbally, in writing, and in presentations. Ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely
• Excellent organizational skills, as demonstrated by the ability to manage competing priorities efficiently and to work well under pressure in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment. Ability to tolerate ambiguity with patience and good will
• Excellent attention to detail and thoroughness in accomplishing assigned tasks; pride in performing the job correctly and completely
• Proficiency in using Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook in a Windows-based environment
