Job Purpose:

The Assistant Director of College Counseling for Stanford OHS will be responsible for providing OHS students and families with the full range of college counseling services expected of established independent schools. Collaborating on a team with two other college counselors, you will work with talented and motivated students to educate them on the college admission process and support their applications, and you will develop strong working relationships with college admission offices.

Job Responsibilities:

The Stanford OHS College Counseling Office utilizes a team-oriented approach. While counselors work with specifically assigned students and families as their primary point of contact, they provide advice that aligns with the team’s shared goals, resulting in a successful college admission process. The ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and families, to understand the unique nature of the school and its students, and to contribute ideas about new initiatives is vital to success in this position. We define success not by specific outcomes and particular colleges to which students are admitted, but by ensuring that our graduates have the opportunity to choose between college options they are excited to attend.

Specific duties for this position include:

Advising students and families in the college application process by:

    • Working with students in grades 7-12 and their families to establish an awareness of college admissions procedures and standards of behavior
    • Shepherding graduates through the college admission process in their final two years at OHS by making individualized recommendations that promote success for each applicant
    • Conducting ongoing one-on-one meetings with students and families to understand unique needs as they relate to college applications, and collaborate on a successful plan
    • Managing college admission expectations for students and families

Providing support for OHS graduating seniors’ college applications by:

    • Writing narrative letters that highlight student strengths and fully contextualize their high school experience
    • Preparing and submitting academic materials on behalf of students
    • Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with a wide range of college and university admissions offices through ongoing communication
    • Working to ensure that colleges have a complete and accurate understanding of the OHS, its course of study, and the unique nature of its students, in order to appropriately evaluate OHS applicants

Collaborating with OHS instructors and staff as a member of a larger administrative group by:

    • Working with instructors to ensure that letters of recommendation are well written and reflect the unique abilities and accomplishments of students
    • Working with the OHS Registrar to ensure that transcripts and supporting documents, such as the school profile, accurately reflect the unique nature of the course of study
    • Working closely with Academic Advisors to ensure that course and extra curricular decisions for students are aligned with college attendance goals
    • Serving on OHS Admissions Committee, assisting the Admissions Office with making decisions on prospective students.
    • Participating and contributing to the common goals of the student support team, though attendance at meetings, sharing perspectives, and engaging in shared activities, as appropriate

    • Compiling and reporting student data including standardized test scores, admission outcomes, and other academic measures for use both internally and externally.

Minimum Requirements:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and management.
  • Advanced analysis and problem solving skills.
  • Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Advanced customer service skills.
  • Relevant computer systems/technology experience.
  • Understanding of financial transactions.
  • Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.
