Stanford Online High School is also the new home of Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies (SPCS), which provides a diverse array of academic enrichment programs that take place mostly in the summer but also throughout the academic year. Held primarily online, SPCS programs serve intellectually curious pre-college students from around the world. 


The Assistant Director of College Counseling will be responsible for providing OHS students and families with the full range of college counseling services expected of established independent schools. In this role, you will work closely with approximately 30 juniors and 30 seniors and their families as they navigate their final two years at OHS and embark on the college search, application, and admission process. In addition to working with students and families through one-on-one meetings, you will collaborate with colleagues to deliver a college counseling course, grade-level programming, and outreach sessions for younger students and their families. Your ability to build relationships, advise students from a range of backgrounds, and navigate difficult situations with diplomacy are essential. 


The Assistant Director of College Counseling also engages regularly with internal and external networks. You will be an important presence at school-wide events supporting vibrant student life and community. You will also have the opportunity to connect with college and university admission colleagues to disseminate information about OHS and learn more about emerging trends at higher education institutions around the world. *Stanford Online High School and Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies offices are located at the Stanford Redwood City Campus, however this position will be performed completely online and requires you to have the ability, technology, and appropriate tools to successfully perform all job duties online. You must be located within the United States of America.*

Your responsibilities include: 

  • Collaborate with a supportive college counseling team to design and implement programs and communications that will support OHS students and families in grades 7-12 through the college application process.
  • Work closely with students and families in their last two years at OHS to guide them through the college application process via ongoing one-on-one meetings while seeking to understand unique needs and collaborate on a plan for a successful process.
  • Write counselor letters of recommendation and prepare all school materials to be sent to colleges on behalf of OHS students; collaborate with OHS instructors, academic advisors, counselors, and the registrar team to ensure that materials are an accurate and complete representation of each student.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with a wide range of college and university admission offices through ongoing communication with college admission representatives.
  • Collect, analyze, and report student data, including standardized test scores, admission  outcomes, and other academic measures for use both internally and externally.
  • Represent OHS and the College Counseling Office through participation in student-focused and staff-focused events, including monthly in-service staff meeting days, Summer@Stanford, Homecoming, Pixel Festival, and Graduation Weekend.
  • Serve on OHS Admissions Committee, assisting the Office of Admission with making decisions on prospective OHS students.

To be successful in this position, you will bring: 

  • Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Exceptional communication skills, particularly the ability to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences.
  • Proficiency using computer applications, including those used for video conferencing, document production, and information management.


Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, perform desk-based computer tasks, and use a telephone.
  • Must be able to conduct real-time voice-video seminars and spend 15-20 hours per week in front of a computer screen.


In addition, preferred requirements include: 

  • Advanced analysis and problem solving skills
  • Advanced customer service skills
  • Relevant computer systems/technology experience
  • Understanding of financial transactions
  • Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations
