Brief Description of your Unit:

Sarafan ChEM-H is an interdisciplinary institute focused on connecting Chemistry, Engineering, and Medicine for Human Health. The institute was founded as a joint venture of the Schools of Medicine, Engineering, and Humanities and Sciences. The proximity of world-class biologists, chemists, engineers, and clinicians at Stanford presents a unique opportunity to study human biology at a molecular level, to translate this knowledge into groundbreaking products and services that promote healthy living, and to educate a new cadre of “physician-scientist-engineers” who will lead a rapidly evolving industry.
 
Sarafan ChEM-H is seeking a highly motivated scientist to serve as the Assistant Director for Chemoproteomics at the Sarafan ChEM-H Knowledge Centers, a series of collaborative research facilities that promote translation of scientific discoveries through access to expertise, mentorship, and equipment. The Assistant Director will report to the faculty Director, and assignees of the Director, of Sarafan ChEM-H.  The Assistant Director will play a critical role in establishing a collaborative relationship between the Sarafan ChEM-H Knowledge Centers, key faculty labs, and other proteomics facilities across the campus.  The Assistant Director will support instrument operation, user training, educational programs, and scientific research collaborations to expand the breadth of researchers at Stanford University who incorporate chemoproteomics into their research programs. Candidates should be self-starters, comfortable with autonomy, and embrace opportunities to tackle new problems and challenges as part of a dynamic team in a start-up-like environment within the University.
 
Distribution of Responsibilities:

  • Approximately 30% time will be spent managing instrumentation installation, maintenance, user training, and general lab operations.
  • Approximately 50% time will be spent working on close/deep collaborations with specific faculty members and their research group members with an emphasis on creating new, independent users of chemoproteomics instrumentation in those research groups. Metrics of success will include academic co-authored publications and new users trained and registered on affiliated instruments. The Assistant Director will have significant autonomy in choosing and developing these collaborations, but priority should be given to groups who otherwise would not be able implement chemoproteomics applications in their research, projects that cannot easily be executed through existing fee-for-service facilities, and to junior faculty. These efforts will include helping new users establish appropriate computational and data analysis support as needed.
  • Approximately 15% time will be spent on effort to cultivate potential users through workshops and user meetings, pilot potential collaborations, and contribute to grant writing to support longer-term collaborative research projects.
  • Approximately 5% time will be spent cultivating relationships with other Knowledge Center leaders, the High Performance Computing team and shared facilities on campus and at peer institutions to support professional development and shepherding of research projects to the best resources available, particularly if the chemoproteomics instrument(s) at ChEM-H may not be the best solution for a particular research question.

General Duties:

  • Applies scientific and / or technical skills and functional knowledge to maintain optimal performance of chemoproteomics instrumentation and collaborative research projects
  • Monitor and support implementation and completion of collaborative studies from study design and sample preparation through data analysis
  • May contribute to initiatives related to continuous improvement or development of new approaches / technologies in proteomics and chemoproteomics, including but not limited to small molecule ligand screening, post-translational modifications, subcellular/organelle proteomics, and target identification.
  • Document, critically review, modify experimental approach if necessary, develop best-practice SOPs, and present experimental data in a timely manner.
  • Liaise with external service vendors to schedule and oversee maintenance on assigned equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience:
Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related field with three years of relevant experience.
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with experimental design, sample preparation & purification, LC-MS/MS operations & acquisition, and proteomic differential statistics & analysis. 
  • Competency in mass spectrometry-based proteomics data collection, processing, analysis, and refinement for publication.
  • Ability to mentor others in the workflows, standard operating procedures, and data analysis to incorporate proteomic assays and platforms into their research programs.
  • Capacity to identify gaps and implement new processes to enhance workflows
  • Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles.
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.

The expected pay range for this position is $105,000 - $135,000 per annum.

The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including equivalent years since their applicable education, field or discipline; departmental budget availability; internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable job; among other factors.
